The Keeping Room Ratings & Reviews
eif999
March 3, 2025
A fine-acted bleak sunlight-less horror western. You definitely have to go in knowing how damn bleak this is. With that said I enjoyed the ride. I can’t imagine life post-war south was this horrible. Hell the nicest thing that happens in this is a woman gets bit by a rabid raccoon and doesn’t die.
Shadow and Act
Zeba Blay
Despite its few narrative flaws, The Keeping Room is a necessary addition to on screen depictions of the American Civil War...
Chicago Reader
Laura Power
Writer Julia Hart and director Daniel Barber develop the women's relationships at a careful, steady pace, giving them time to bond; this is essential since they must learn to trust and respect each other to survive.
Detroit News
Tom Long
Dark, brooding and brutal, "The Keeping Room" features finely carved performances in a Civil War period piece that might as well be post-apocalyptic.
San Diego Reader
Matthew Lickona
The landscape is appropriately lush, the brutality is deftly rendered, and if the action is minimal, that may be because it isn't quite the point.
Arizona Republic
Barbara VanDenburgh
Despite its sparseness and haunting photography, the film proves to be little more than a home-invasion thriller low on thrills.
Philadelphia Inquirer
Molly Eichel
Director Daniel Barber has a talent for sussing out the brutality intrinsic in the everyday.
Boston Globe
Peter Keough
Whatever its intentions, "The Keeping Room" does little more than preserve the illusion of a martyred, righteous Confederacy.
Austin Chronicle
Josh Kupecki
A ruthlessly satisfying thriller, The Keeping Room will linger with the viewer long after the credits roll.
Washington Post
Alan Zilberman
"The Keeping Room" amounts to a series of similar verses of the same song, repeating its themes until the drama veers from horror to tedium. Unwavering pessimism is an inadequate substitute for nuance or complexity.
San Francisco Chronicle
Mick LaSalle
Watching just becomes a matter of waiting for the pain to stop. But if you're in the mood for this kind of entertainment, "The Keeping Room" is a cut above the usual.
New York Magazine/Vulture
David Edelstein
The Keeping Room is yet another powerful, post-apocalyptic survivalist drama about man's inhumanity to man -- in this case, woman. The difference is that it's set in the past and is more or less historically accurate.
Tribune News Service
Katie Walsh
Men go to battle, but women often take the brunt of war's cruelties.
Entertainment Weekly
Chris Nashawaty
I'm positive there's an audience for an Old West tale about fierce, independent women. I'm equally positive it can be done better.

Thelma Adams
The home invasion thriller occasionally clashes with the period damsels drama-a bit more breathless, a little less breathy? And, yet, the feminist Civil War film remains a fascinating historical tale unfolding on fertile ground.

Susan Wloszczyna
For about two-thirds of its length ... "The Keeping Room" steadily holds the viewer in its narrative clutches.
New York Times
Nicolas Rapold
The ravages of the Civil War shouldn't require much jazzing up for the movies, but the British director Daniel Barber labors to impress with his Southern period thriller "The Keeping Room."
Los Angeles Times
Sheri Linden
An intriguing premise never finds a dramatic pulse in "The Keeping Room," a self-consciously artsy depiction of female grit during the final days of the Civil War.
AV Club
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky
Another lurid exploitation film classed up with moody lighting and character monologues, with none of the authentic regional flavor or amateur energy that gave real grindhouse flicks their tang.
Village Voice
Alan Scherstuhl
The film's frustrating, fascinating, at times too eager to shock. But it's also daring and eccentric.
