The Invite, directed by Olivia Wilde, is a chamber piece starring Wilde herself alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton. Wilde and Rogen play a couple meandering through a sexless, resentment‑filled marriage. She spends her days remodeling their apartment, and on a whim decides to invite their upstairs neighbors to dinner. Wilde wants to apologize for the noise from the remodel, while Rogen wants to confront them about the provocative but disruptive noises they hear coming from upstairs.
This confrontation becomes the catalyst for the couple to confront the shortcomings in their own marriage, their communication,  their desires and the fractures in their relationship. The result is a riotously funny, beautifully acted character drama. Rogen is dependably funny, Cruz is as charming and seductive as ever, and Norton is fantastic. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him in such a substantial, dialogue‑driven role where you really get to watch him perform. But the revelation here is Wilde. She gives a beautifully vulnerable performance paired with sharp comedic timing and instincts.
Shot sequentially, the cast spent significant time workshopping the material, and it shows. Each actor brings a real authenticity to their role. And the film ends on a lovely note, though, I suppose that might be open enough to invite interpretation.
I’m honestly a little stunned by how much I loved this. Beautifully shot and framed, extremely well acted and incredibly funny. I was laughing throughout the length of the film. This was the SIFF closing night film, presented on a 35mm print with a post screening Q&A from Wilde. Both the print and Wilde were absolutely lovely.
