The Hunt for Red October Ratings & Reviews
- Michael SurberJune 5, 2025Connery vs Baldwin. Who do you think would win? Well, not here! Actually one of the best Jack Ryan films and of course it sets up pretty much all that follow. Alec Baldwin was terribly miscast in the role but still manages to be fairly convincing as Ryan. Still holds up after all these years though. Connery is amazing as usual.
- Rick3d agoAbout as good of a Cold War movie as you could get. The story is great, the acting is fantastic, and the movie looks great. The best part about this movie is how limited the communication is. Every little bit of communication is slow, limited, risks being interpreted incorrectly, and often simply isn’t possible for long stretches. Sam Neill’s character…. Poor guy just wanted a round American woman who would cook him rabbit stew.
- 匚卂尺ㄥMarch 5, 2025Quick take: Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin shine as Captain Ramius and Jack Ryan, respective. This classic played on lots of tried and true but not overdone dynamics: US/Russian competition, political lies, and Jack Ryan somehow knowing better than the entire US government (see Sum of All Fears, Crimson Tide, etc) What happens with the most famous Russian Captain decides to defect with the Russian federation's newest, most technologically advanced submarine - without 98% of his crew knowing oh and btw he let his superiors know his intentions before leaving? A killer movie, that's what. The good news is Ramius knows what he's doing. Having trained most of the Russian submarine Captains, their tactics he swats away like they're a fly short one wing. But how does he deliver a football stadium sized submarine to the US without raising suspicion, alarm, and getting destroyed? Enter Jack Ryan. Mr. Ryan (just, a CIA analyst, like in all his films), flies in on a helicopter with zero fuel, lies to the US submarine captain, and basically cons his way on to Ramius' ship. But the good news? He has a strong suspicion that Ramius wants to defect, and he's right. The rest of the movie is exceptional for Seaman Jones' amazing radio ear, interplay between the Russian ambassador and politician Pelt, male bravado, and Ramius' naval genius. You know how it's going to end, but you don't know how, and even on the 5th time watching it, I still get tingles. Highly Recommend. I may even live in Montana because of it.
- Zokkiie7d agoThis is a solid Cold War thriller. Sean Connery is great as the Russian sub captain, and Alec Baldwin plays a surprisingly chill Jack Ryan. It’s not super action-packed, but the tension builds nicely, and the submarine stuff is way more exciting than you'd think. Feels a bit slow in parts, but overall, it holds up well. Pretty cool movie, worth checking out.
- CaramoorMay 2, 2025This is a must see. Great suspense and fun by master filmmakers.
- Kɱҽƚȥ TԋҽαƚҽɾApril 20, 2025I'm not one to watch movies much more than once or twice, but this is one I've seen at least eight times. Great movie and worth the watch.
- Hendrik PapeMarch 15, 2025Still one of my favourite of the Tom Clancy film series. Baldwin and Connery are brilliant in their respective roles and the supporting cast is superb.
