A classic of suspense and fear. A dark story where the atmosphere is key. Rutger Hauer’s best performance

Intense and relentless throughout. Rutger Hauer is superb in the role (I only seen him in Blade Runner so I ought to watch more of his movies). You really feel the victim's madness and it excuses any poor decision making. Really enjoyed it so it has held up well over the decades.

Caught it on a movie channel back in the day and damn, Rutger Hauer (RIP) nailed it. Years later, I grabbed the DVD just to have it in the collection and it still hits. I didn’t know much going in back then, just that it was some kind of road thriller. But once Rutger Hauer shows up as John Ryder, it’s game over. He’s calm, creepy, and completely unpredictable. No backstory, no motive, just this quiet psycho who turns a simple ride into a nightmare. And the way he plays it? Chilling. He doesn’t shout, doesn’t rant,he just exists, like a force of nature. You can’t look away. Thomas Howell does fine as the kid caught in the mess, but let’s be honest, this is Hauer’s movie. Every time he’s on screen, the tension spikes. You never know what he’s going to do next, and that’s what makes it work. Forget the remake. This is the one. Rutger Hauer didn’t just play a villain, he became one of the most unnerving characters I’ve ever seen. No gimmicks, no flash, just pure menace.

Rutger Hauer’s performance in The Hitcher is a standout, delivering a chilling and unpredictable portrayal of John Ryder, a hitchhiker who turns out to be a sadistic killer. The film creates a relentless tension as Ryder stalks Jim Halsey, the main character, across desolate roads, evoking a sense of isolation similar to films like Vanishing Point. However, the film’s protagonist, Jim Halsey, falls short. His character feels poorly written and acted, leading to frustration with his illogical decisions. Additionally, other characters’ actions sometimes defy reason, further diminishing the film’s believability. While The Hitcher has its moments of suspense and a compelling antagonist, the combination of a lackluster protagonist and questionable character motivations ultimately holds it back. This film might appeal to those who enjoy relentless road thrillers, but for others, it may fall short of expectations. There’s also a strange artistic choice to only show graphic violence or gore at certain times. For instance, the largest and most shocking scene involving a woman tied to a car is simply cut to black. For fans of relentless road thrillers with a sense of isolation and escalating suspense, The Hitcher will appeal to those who enjoyed films like Duel, Joy Ride, or Vanishing Point. The eerie, desolate atmosphere and the cat-and-mouse tension make it a fitting watch for anyone drawn to unsettling encounters on the open road.
