The Fugitive Ratings & Reviews

Harrison Ford (born Horris Frump, but changed the name as another actor with this name already existed) plays fugitive Doctor Richmond Winkler. Winkler is on the run from the law after accidently killing his wife while playing croquet. (Winkler hits his ball so hard, it bounces off a wall and knocks the wife out cold. She doesn't die from this, but it is when Winkler carries her back into the house, he carelessly drops her body into their pond en route, where she swallows a koi carp and duly chokes to death.) Ford is used to playing men on the run. The little discussed straight to video 'The Man Who Ran At A Leisurely Pace' was a notorious box office flop, thanks largely to the man in question being caught by the law in the first ten minutes of the film. The rest of the film focusing on him filling in legal forms failed to excite audiences. The Fugitive is a fun film full of twists and turns and breathtaking stunts. There is one scene where Ford jumps onto a fast-moving tram. For me, the best part of the film is where Ford dons all manner of disguises to hide from the law. Dressing up as a woman to attend an all female sycronised swimming class and later pretending to be a lamppost by arching his back carefully, these disguises are executed superbly. The guy on the tail of the fugitive is wisecracking sheriff Tim Curry, who brings a delicious camp charm to the part. It is such a shame that he is only used in two scenes and has just two lines 'Where are you hiding Richmond?' and 'Oooh there you are!' What makes this so interesting is that our fugitive is visually impaired and also has a false leg, which means he limps everywhere, frequently crashes into things and makes him stand out like a sore thumb in crowds. Ford plays this with sensitivity and charm. When the film finished I rushed out to buy all the merchandise, including the two available action figures (The Fugitive figure was fun, but there was less play value with 'Man Who Thinks He Has Seen Fugitive In Shop' figure).
Seattle Times

The film is little more than a well-oiled machine that serves a strictly limited function, but like a precision timepiece, it is a thing to marvel at, even under close scrutiny.
Chicago Tribune
Clifford Terry
Working from a tight script by Jeb Stuart and David Twohy, director Andrew Davis has fashioned a crackling, intelligent thriller.
Orlando Sentinel
Jay Boyar
While there are actors in this film, there isn't much room for acting. The rapid editing and near-absence of dialogue reduces the actors to action figures with colorful labels pasted on their foreheads.
Chicago Tribune
Gene Siskel
I've already seen The Fugitive twice. I'll probably see it again.
Philadelphia Inquirer
Steven Rea
Thoroughly engaging, edge-of-the-seat entertainment.
Entertainment Weekly
Owen Gleiberman
It isn't just a high-powered summer blockbuster. It's something cannier (and rarer): a suspense thriller rooted in character.
Decent Films
Steven D. Greydanus
Taut, effective serial-chase story.
The Hollywood Reporter
Duane Byrge
Call something a "real train wreck" and it's considered a put-down. Not in this fast-track, no-stops chase movie with a massive train-wreck scene that's going to have audiences scrambling for cover.
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers
For dynamite suspense loaded with thrills and wicked fun, you can't beat The Fugitive.
Los Angeles Times
Kenneth Turan
The Fugitive is a super-adrenalized stemwinder, a crisp and jolting melodrama that screws the tension so pitilessly tight it does everything but squeak.
The New Yorker
Anthony Lane
It's a pleasure to find a thriller fulfilling its duties with such gusto: the emotions ring solid, the script finds time to relax into backchat, and for once the stunts look like acts of desperation rather than shows of prowess.
TIME Magazine
Richard Schickel
A first-rate thriller.
Variety
Leonard Klady
A consummate nail-biter that never lags, it leaves you breathless from the chase yet anxious for the next bit of mayhem or clever plot twist.
Chicago Reader
Jonathan Rosenbaum
Though it's a good half hour too long, this overblown 1993 spin-off of the 60s TV show otherwise adds up to a pretty good suspense thriller.
New York Times
Janet Maslin
Both stars have toughness and restraint that make their characters' battle of wits truly hypnotic, and in many ways more credible than it was on television.
Washington Post
Desson Thomson
A juggernaut of exaggeration, momentum and thrills.
Chicago Sun-Times
Richard Roeper
Directed with surgeon-like precision by Chicago native Andrew Davis
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
...as far as the chase genre goes, there have been worse films (better ones, too).
Washington Post
Rita Kempley
A flurry of stunts, close shaves and deeds of desperate daring, it easily transcends its television origins to become a stylish pacemaker-buster on the order of "Die Hard, MD."
