It starts as a debt-collection bruiser, then turns into a grimy buddy-action adventure with a little comedy, a little crime, a lot of ass-kicking, and a nice tour through the underbelly of Los Angeles. Adkins was smart to surround himself with good actors, because his chemistry with Louis Mandylor is the real engine here — the two of them play off each other so well that even when the plot wanders, you’re happy to keep riding shotgun. The characters are not especially deep, and the movie is more interested in momentum than nuance, but that is also part of the charm: it keeps moving, keeps surprising you with where the director wants to go next, and never settles for being just one thing. Predictable? Sure, at times. But it is also funny, rough, weirdly likable, and way more enjoyable than a movie called The Debt Collector has any right to be. Other reviewers also tended to single out the Adkins-Mandylor chemistry as the big selling point, even when they were less impressed by the story itself.
