The Dark Knight Ratings & Reviews
- Edward Schofield4d ago2 iconic villains + the best director.
- MooreyGTApril 22, 2025Surprisingly enjoyable, probably one of the better Batman films I've seen
- Manuel FrangisApril 13, 2025I just watched The Dark Knight, and I give it 5 out of 5 stars. This is not just one of the best superhero movies ever made it is one of the best movies, period. It is intense, emotional, haunting, and completely unforgettable. From the very first scene, it pulls you in and does not let go. There is no moment wasted. Every scene builds tension, pushes the story forward, or reveals something deeper about the characters. It is rare to see a movie this sharp and this powerful all the way through. Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne, and this time he is even more locked into the role. His version of Batman feels more complex here. He is torn between being the symbol Gotham needs and holding onto what little of his personal life he has left. He is tired. He is pushing himself further. And you feel the weight of every decision he has to make. This movie really puts the idea of what it means to be a hero to the test. But the performance that defines this movie is Heath Ledger as the Joker. He is beyond incredible. Every line, every expression, every laugh — it all feels completely real and terrifying. He is unpredictable, and that is what makes him so scary. You never know what he is going to do next, and the way he pulls people into his chaos makes every scene with him feel like it could explode at any second. It is one of the most iconic performances ever put on screen, and for good reason. Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent is another key piece of what makes the story hit so hard. His journey in this movie is emotional and tragic. He is a character you root for, and watching what happens to him is heartbreaking in the most honest way. His arc ties directly into the movie’s biggest theme — the line between justice and revenge, order and chaos. The supporting cast is just as strong. Michael Caine continues to bring heart and wisdom as Alfred. Morgan Freeman is cool and calm as Lucius Fox. Gary Oldman shines as Jim Gordon, showing just how complicated it is to do the right thing in a city that keeps falling apart. Everyone matters. Everyone has weight. And that is part of what makes the movie feel so real. The action is incredible, but it is never just action for the sake of it. Every chase, every fight, every explosion has purpose. The practical effects and the way Nolan shoots these scenes make everything feel grounded. There are no flashy tricks. Just real tension. The truck flip scene is still one of the best stunts ever done in a movie. The score by Hans Zimmer is intense and unforgettable. That Joker theme with the rising strings gives you chills. The way the music rises and falls with the story makes everything feel even more epic. I give The Dark Knight 5 out of 5 stars because it is bold, emotional, and unforgettable. It is not about superpowers. It is about people making impossible choices in an unfair world, and what it means to stand for something anyway. Overall The Dark Knight is a masterpiece of storytelling, performance, and filmmaking. It changed what superhero movies could be, and it still stands as one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. I will never get tired of watching it.
- MikeOctober 11, 2024The Dark Knight is, arguably, the best comicbook film ever made and remains one of my favorite films "Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight." I have always liked the Batman films, and the Joker is for me one of the most interesting DC characters. Combine this with the fact that Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite director’s and Hans Zimmer is one of my favorite composers, The Dark Knight was a dream come true! The cinematography of The Dark Knight, especially with the IMAX scenes, look aesthetically stunning. The Gotham flyover’s and the characteristic way Batman is framed in the shots is beautifully done. The modern, yet atmospheric and dark, looking Gotham City makes this feel like a real Batman film but in a refreshing way. Hans Zimmer enhanced the cinematography with his dark and epic sounding score. A score that really fits the atmosphere of Gotham City and the Batman character. The acting in The Dark Knight is the best out of the trilogy. Heath Ledger depicted the Joker like no one else. His acting is, arguably, one of the best performances in film history. Not only the acting, but also the costume design, contributed to this great depiction of the Joker. This modern-day Batman is (not by far) my favorite Batman out of all of them. His suit is definitely one of the most detailed and beautiful looking suit out of all of them. Combine this with Christian Bale’s charisma, the modern gadgets and the Tumbler, and you will have an interesting Vigilante that you empathize with. As a Batman, Christopher Nolan and Hans Zimmer fan it is no surprise that The Dark Knight Trilogy are my favorite comicbook films. Even if you’re not a comicbook fan, The Dark Knight remains one of the best films ever made. Letterboxd: Mike_v_E

- Daniel GustavssonOctober 12, 2024Just a fantastic movie. This version of the Joker is hands down the best ever put to screen.
- Abdulaziz ZubailahFebruary 22, 2025A perfect movie, engaging and captivating from start to finish
- Brad.Plex.October 13, 2024Ledger's performance alone is enough to catapult this film into must-watch territory. Unlike many other iterations of Batman, Nolan's take is so realistic I often forget I'm watching a super-hero movie.
- The Gutter MonkeyFebruary 7, 2025Does it live up to the hype of being one of the best films ever? Um, no. Not at all. It brims with plot contrivances, it's too long, it's often all over the place, the relationships sometimes feel forced, and despite many fans pretending like its full of depth and symbolism, it's really a rather simple story (especially from Christopher Nolan). It's a good story, though, the villain is top-notch, and it's great fun to watch. While it may be overrated as one of our best films, it is one of our better superhero ones.

- VarunOctober 19, 2024Rewatched this film because I found a fan edit that spliced all the imax 70mm scenes into one cohesive print. I used to think this movie was a perfect masterpiece when I was a kid but I saw a lot of flaws this time around. I didn’t like Bruce/Batman very much. I didn’t enjoy the smug billionaire persona he used as a mask, and I also didn’t think his real persona had much emotion to it. When Rachel dies, he doesn’t even look devastated. I mean she was the love of his life and the first tragedy to strike him after his parents’ death, you would assume he would be bawling or exhibiting immense rage. And as Batman, the raspy voice comes off as cringe now, which is why it’s been memed to death. He isn’t very menacing and doesn’t particularly seem very smart either. When it comes to the Joker, especially for the first half of the film, his plans feel quite unrealistic and drummed up by the plot. You don’t get to see why and how Joker amasses a huge following amongst the mob and Gotham’s criminals. I mean sure, they love the chaos he‘s stewing but I think majority of criminals do have strong goals, and the ones who love anarchy uncharacteristically stick to plans and show undying loyalty to the Joker as a leader. And I’m not convinced by Harvey Dent’s descent into darkness from just a single short conversation with the Joker at the hospital. Two Face’s whole shtick is having a split personality but Harvey just becomes a one note bad guy who leaves killings up to chance for some unexplained reason. I also feel there’s way too much monologuing and not enough normal conversations between all the characters. Despite all these issues (which I’m sure I’m only noticing on a rewatch 16 years later), I still really enjoyed the movie. Heath Ledger’s performance is just mind blowing, the Joker steals every scene he’s in and really comes off as a force to be reckoned with. They did a good job exploring various themes. The action scenes in IMAX are fucking glorious, with the bike chase scene being my favourite. Hans Zimmer is brilliant as always with that tense and energetic score. The pacing is tight and focused so you’re engaged till the very end. And for a superhero movie that released in 2008, it was a serious and fresh take that made many people respect the genre and it undeniably had a huge impact on comic book movies that still rings to this day.
