The atmosphere and acting are fine, it's just there's too many cheap jumpscares. They should have called it "Jumpscares - the movie".

A Scary and Heartbreaking Film Our intro is very warm and cozy with female character, and she does a proper hard days work on her property. We appear to have some happenings early off, and I'm unsure if it's a regular occurrence or something entirely different. We now have more main characters on the property, and the odd happenings are still occurring. Things have gotten ugly really fast, and we've had a truly terrible tragedy happen. Stranger and stranger, things are just getting worse, or maybe we're seeing what was always there and not talked about. Such a simple and humble life to begin, and we have such a terribly ominous aura now being felt stronger with each day. I knew when I saw that Marin Ireland is in this film that we'd be in for an emotional ride, and she isn't disappointing. It's so hard to get your footing and slow your heart with all the terror that is being unleashed, and it appears to be escalating.

I watched this movie as I am going through the Science of Scare list which ranks movies based on viewer heart rates and heart rate variance. The Dark and the Wicked is ranked a very impressive 12 on the list, tied with It Follows and The Conjuring 2. Needless to say, my expectations were skyhigh. I was very disappointed to be honest. This movie is not necessarily the haunted house style of jump scares that some others on the list are like. It's far more of that bleak, slow-burn psychological horror. To be clear, it does have jump scares, I just would say the movie is not in that "fun" camp of horror and more one of those that tries to make you more depressed than anything else. The problem is that it just does not have the depth or technical chops to hold its own against other similar bleak movies on that list. First off, this movie does seem to hint at themes related to grief, familial bonds, letting go, suicide, and religion. However, these are extremely superficial. In fact, I would say it's worse than being superficial. I would say the movie mishandles a lot of these themes with plenty of muddled messaging throughout. I am not entirely sure what it was trying to say, but it's irresponsible at best. Second, the actors are just not interesting or engaging. Marin Ireland emotes a lot throughout, but I found myself not caring about her at all. Michael Abbott Jr. is a blank void, and there is one big scene at the end where his phone-it-in acting really prevents anything from landing. Given how crucial elements of these types of horror movies are missing, I think it really relies on the aforementioned jumpscares to try and build atmosphere. However, even here, I was less than impressed. Sure, there can be creepy moments. However, it relies on one technique multiple times where characters disappear before appearing behind someone. That's about the only trick this movie has up its sleep, outside of just being bleak. The imagery is not particularly memorable either. I guess I can see why it performed in this Scare Metric, but I think this is a lot weaker than other movies that it ranks higher or the same as. I also just don't think it is a pleasant watch. If I am going to watch this type of bleak movie, I want it to have something interesting to say, either in terms of larger themes or at least about its characters. It doesn't do that. If it isn't fun, doing something inventive in terms of cinematography or scares, and it is just depressing for the sake of being depressing, I can't think of a reason to watch this unless you are looking to just see messed up things for the sake of seeing them.

Eerie, very well constructed narrative. Maybe the very ending is the only reason to 4.5 stars. Anyway, highly recomended.

I thought this was scary as heck ngl quite impressed on that front! Basic story, light on the writing, but some fantastic horror direction! Welp the sound design sure sucked me in lol Having the door and window open while I watched this really added an aroma and raised the whole farm aesthetic to a-whole-nothsr level. Unhurried yet rousing. Simple yet effective. Once again: Sound up, windows open, door ajar (I’m only kinda trying to rob you) Note: I had apparently seen this before. Zero recollection but an accurate rating!
