This movie simultaneously feels way better than it has any right to be yet also much worse than it deserves to be. Chris Pine and Ben Foster re-team and rekindle some of their old Hell or High Water magic. Keifer Sutherland puts his stamp on his character—you’ll never guess what happens.
Ultimately, this film is passably entertaining. Don’t go out of your way to catch this, but it’s not bad. Watched with the whole family, but none of them were really feeling this one either. Loses half a star for that. Although we did get to teach them what FUBAR means, so they’ll have something to share with friends at school tomorrow.

The Contractor is a solid, grounded military thriller that leans more on disillusionment than spectacle. After being involuntarily discharged from U.S. Army Special Forces, James Harper turns to private contracting to support his family. What begins as a pragmatic decision quickly descends into a murky operation, betrayal, and survival. The plot is straightforward, but the film’s strength lies in tone and character rather than twists. The most striking element is its indictment of the American military myth. The culture celebrates soldiers relentlessly: flags everywhere, ritualized gratitude, public reverence, performative patriotism. Young men are encouraged to build their identity around service but the moment they become inconvenient, medically compromised, or financially burdensome, the system discards them with clinical indifference. The film treats this not as tragedy but as routine. "Thank you for your service" becomes a hollow social tic, a polite phrase that costs nothing and replaces any meaningful obligation, as impactful as "thoughts and prayers". The result is a society that fetishizes the soldier while abandoning the veteran. The film’s anger here is not subtle, and it should not be. It portrays a system that extracts loyalty and repays it with paperwork, debt, and silence. US mIlitary reverence is clearly depicted as sheer and utter bullshit. Chris Pine carries the film effectively. He plays a man shaped by doctrine, discipline, and belief, someone whose identity is inseparable from service. Watching that certainty erode is the core arc. First the institution removes him. Then the private sector exploits him. Finally, even the brotherhood he trusted proves untrustworthy. Pine sells the slow collapse without theatrics. Ben Foster is, as usual, reliable and essential. His presence adds credibility and tension, and he anchors the emotional logic of the contracting world. The dynamic between the two feels worn and eventually tattered. The action is restrained and realistic. No superhero choreography, no indulgent slow motion. The violence is abrupt, messy, and tactical. Direction and pacing are disciplined, and the film avoids overreaching. It is not especially innovative, but it is sharper than expected. A competent thriller elevated by a bitter, unsentimental view of loyalty, patriotism, and the disposable nature of the people who embody both.

The Contractor starts off well, with a solid setup and some decent action. Chris Pine gives a strong performance, and the first two-thirds build up some good tension. But the final act really lets it down. The story loses focus, and the pacing slows way down. It had potential, but the ending just doesn’t deliver.

Good! Solid acting, solid directing, good story. Ending needed a little work.
