Where to Watch The Conjuring
- I don't even know how many times I've watched this now but James Wan truly changed the horror game with this one. I remember I was still working at Regal at the time this came out and there was a lot of buzz about how this had received an R rating but not for language or nudity, just for pure horror. I don't think that's happened since? Wan ingeniously set up a shared universe in this with the Warren's collection room. It feels like almost every piece in there could be it's own standalone spinoff film. The cast is great, the scares are great. I was in the mood to marathon this series as there are entries I have not yet seen. Stay tuned... Starting with this one I would like to rate the evil entities each film features - Bathsheba: - 4 out of 5 - truly creepy looking - the clap game was sinister and scary enough to be put in the trailers - exorcism level type stuff - attempting to scare and kill an adult can be creepy but trying to kill a kid is on a whole other level
- ## Synopsis A family moves into a old farmhouse and quickly begins to be terrorized by forces unseen. To combat this, they enlist the help of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. ## Review Did you know that this movie was supposedly on [the list] of the "Scariest movies as ranked by ~~Phycologist~~ a Scare score"? I didn't, but after watching it, I understand why. The scares that happen are pretty consistent without major effect and then are not what you expect from them. A good for instance is there is a scene where someone is in the basement. While in the basement, some things happen to include the appearance of someone hanging themselves. However, while the pop in of that is creepy, it is the way the body moves after that add to the fright. Something you do not typically see. This movie is also where this world began. From [[Annabelle]] and [[The Nun]], we get Ed and Lorraine who are played wonderfully by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. I think why this movie series has done a bit better than others consistently is there is some historical reference. Believe what you will, but Ed and Lorraine are real people. They claim to have been hunting and exorcising ghost/demons since the 60s, which is shown in this movie by their room of curiosities. These two play them so well. The story is really good. After watching Annabelle, there are some similar plot points that for sure makes them feel repetitive. However, this movie does a great job of showing the interactions and pull between people. The setting is also very cool. ## [My Rating] I enjoyed this movie years ago when I first watched it and I enjoyed it today. There is a scene where they have a very narrow flashlight look and the camera basically can only sere where the flashlight is. Something a out it just stands out in my head and that scene is just well done in raising the creep factor. It is interesting to see these younger women in a movie that I know recognize as being popular in Hollywood, so kudos to them for doing well in this movie. I am giving this an 8. ## [Parental Rating] Again, we are talking about demons and exorcisms. The fact that these people are God-fearing individuals, might make it better, but not really. Language is there, but no crazy words. No sex. Violence is up there though quite a bit. Rejected by both.
- While age (and imitators) have taken away some of its luster, when The Conjuring was released it was unique. It took a story that was more than the standard surface level, leveraged some top notch actors, and superior direction to create a horror movie that didn't sit in a tactic, let its characters (at least the four leads) breathe, and in general created one of the best popular horror movies in years.
- Where it all began! The Conjuring immediately draws you in with the story of the Perron family and the disturbing house they move into—a place where something feels deeply, fundamentally wrong. Let me say, the cinematography here is fantastic! The techniques director James Wan uses—from his camera placement to the long, creeping shots—make the film feel intensely eerie and genuinely unsettling. The performances are all top-notch, but Lili Taylor as Carolyn Perron is a standout. What she delivers, especially during the possession sequence, is absolutely entrancing. It immediately brought me back to watching The Exorcist for the first time. I even remember telling my wife that this film had that same kind of shocking, visceral impact. While The Exorcist is overall a much better film, some scenes here, particularly those featuring Taylor, slap hard. I truly love this film, but I don't watch it often precisely because of the deep sense of seriousness and dread it manages to convey. This was my third viewing, and it remains great!
