The Catechism Cataclysm Ratings & Reviews

My quick rating - 3.7/10. Steve Little had some funny spots on Reno 911, but in this flick, his trying to hold the audience just doesn't work. Throughout this whole thing, he just acts like such an annoying idiot that you more or less hope his head is the one that explodes. Anyway, if you do bother, this weird priest that he plays contacts his idol from high school and invites him on a canoeing trip. Most likely some inside joke, which much of this movie has to be. The IMDB ratings and reviews prove it has a LOT of friends to jack up the numbers since it isn't being done due to the material. From here, it goes on a little dramatic turn for a bit before attempting some crazy acid trip, or at least I am sure that is what they thought they were doing. In reality, it was just some stupid scene to actually have something happen in this movie. There are some laughs in this flick, not sure if they were intentional or not, but overall, a waste of 0s and 1s on my media server.
The Last Thing I See
Brent McKnight
The film is kind of a road trip, kind of a voyage of self-discovery, and kind of an "Apocalypse Now" style journey into a chaotic, surreal hell.
Reel Film Reviews
David Nusair
...it's ultimately impossible to walk away from The Catechism Cataclysm feeling that it could (and should) have been much, much better.
Cinematical
John Gholson
It's a very dumb comedy made by very smart folks.
Ebert Presents At The Movies
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky
A lot of it is tedious and directionless.
Movie Dearest
Fr. Chris Carpenter
As a professional preacher, I could appreciate (the film) to some degree as a satiric take on storytelling in both religious and secular circles. Sorry to say, that's about as far as my appreciation goes.
Los Angeles Times
Gary Goldstein
A grating and witless would-be spoof of religion, male-bonding and, it seems, horror movies.
Boston Phoenix
A priest and a washed-up heavy metal drummer step into a boat. . . . This isn't the start of a joke, but rather the plot of Todd Rohal's strange IFC film.

William and Robbie's adventure has a shaggy-dog charm that's hard to resist.
AV Club
Noel Murray
Even after the movie takes its turn for the surreal, it remains rooted in the reactions of slack-faced good guy Little and the gruff-but-loveable Longstreet.
New York Times

Weird and well-acted...
Village Voice
Nick Schager
Taking the notion of toilet humor literally but incapable of delivering its promised religious satire, The Catechism Cataclysm is more muddled than its tongue-twister title.
IndieWire
Eric Kohn
It's essentially a hilariously brazen lark, which is reason enough to embrace it.
Slant Magazine
Simon Abrams
While the ending to any shaggy-dog story is supposed to be irrelevant, The Catechism Cataclysm's capper is particularly enervating.
Dread Central
Heather Wixson
It has the potential to be a midnight cult classic that fans will discover for years to come.
New York Press
Leslie Stonebraker
rather than use this premise as a set up for bible satire, the film relies on diarrhea jokes and uninspired buddy-bonding to carry us through an ill-plotted tale of damnation and redemption
Philadelphia Inquirer
Steven Rea
It seems hopelessly without a point - unless the point has something to do with dropping a Bible into a dirty toilet.
UGO
Jordan Hoffman
Catechism Cataclysm ain't perfect, but people in the, um, right frame of mind will definitely have a big, dopey grin on their face.
