Is it a coincidence that theater chains are struggling badly in 2026 while most of the films meant to bring in audiences are flat out terrible? I always go in hoping for the next masterpiece until I'm disappointed. In the case of "The Bride!" it didn't take long. This film is plagued by jumbled ideas, incoherent dialogue that often isn't discernible and feels like rambling at times and a director in over her head. Look, I'm a fan of Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal as actors but Maggie has a long way to go as a director. Jake is just about completely wasted here. The great Christian Bale is limited by the script and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there was a bunch of improvising here. I was really looking forward to a fresh take on classic tale and it really disappointed. Here's hoping that the slate of 2026's films going forward are much better, because so far, they've been quite disappointing and bad and "The Bride" is no different. I would NOT Recommend "The Bride!".

Resplendent in every way. Jessie Buckley is THE SHIT. Everyone else great as always. Maggie had some fun good for her, loved it.

Possibly one of the worst films (I've watched) so far this year, I had really high hopes for this one. No wonder it only made 1/4 of the $80m budget at the box office!

    Fucking pile of dog shit

This movie is just terrible. It is obvious this was someones vanity project as the stars in it show that someone thought this would be brilliant. However, it is not fun, it is not campy, it is not horror, it is not artsy...it is just bad with attempts to make it seem like it is high art. In reality... it is just terrible.

Worst version of Frankenstein I've ever seen. This movie has no idea what it wants to be, a monster movie, a ghost story, a gangster film, a musical. There is no direction whatsoever and it makes it almost impossible to watch.

Not sure why Frankenstein has been such a popular property Hollywood has desperately tried to pump woke ideology into over the past 3-4 years but The Bride is another Frankenstein film that fails to hit the mark. It wants to be seen as artsy and daring like Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein film. However, director Maggie Gyllenhall instead does everything she can to steer clear of what makes the tragic monster unique and instead wants to make the film an odd mashup of The Great Gatsby and Joker: Folie a Deux. Christian Bale plays Frankenstein like a simp while Jessie Buckley really tries hard and sometimes achieves moments of greatness as the Bride. However, the script doesn’t do any of the actors any favors and ultimately the film descends into yet another preachy woke story that not only misses the point, it fails to make a convincing one. And don’t get me started on the cringe inducing dance numbers. On paper, the idea of a Bonnie and Clyde/Frankenstein and his Bride mashup sounds great. Maybe in a better director’s hands it could have been. Bottom line, this film is one Bride that audiences should leave at the altar.

Maggie Gyllenhaal's latest project is a frustrating exercise in creative self-indulgence that consistently values chaotic style over a coherent plot. Reimagining a classic monster myth as a 1930s body-horror road movie sounds intriguing on paper, but the actual execution is completely scatterbrained. We see the film wildly shift between different genres without ever mastering a single one. This lack of focus is particularly obvious in how it handles its themes, where the film heavily oversells its messages of empowerment. Rather than letting these ideas develop naturally through a compelling story, the script pushes them with a heavy-handed, aggressive insistence that feels forced and preachy, ultimately flattening the entire message. The biggest disappointment is that an exceptionally strong cast can't save this film from its own identity crisis. While the performers do everything they can to inject life into the material, they are severely undermined by a script that gives them nothing but thin archetypes and clunky dialogue to work with. The stunning cinematography and intricate production design provide plenty of visual flair, but it quickly becomes apparent that the movie is just an empty shell. It aims for a bold, revolutionary cinematic statement but ultimately delivers nothing more than cheap provocation, leaving you with a half-formed puzzle that never comes together.

This film is what happens when weird theater kids get access to a Hollywood budget. It’s all over the place with its ideas, both creative and borrowed. It clearly has elements from Bonnie & Clyde’s story, Natural Born Killers, Thriller, etc and never really lives up to any of those or has any cohesive thoughts.

A weird movie with weird sensibilities. The film has a jerky, erratic nature that wasn't my cup of tea. Impromptu dance numbers, unearned emotional beats and odd character choices combine to make a quirky (not in a good way) flick. It looks nice though.

Amazing. Hope they make a second one

Loved it. It won't be for everyone, but I really enjoyed it. An eclectic mix of of storytelling style that kept me entertained throughout.

It's an immortal Bonnie and Clyde. I dig it. It's a rewatch for me.
