The Beta Test Ratings & Reviews

The dialogue was weird, and the main guy was also weird. It made me laugh, but I'm not sure if it was supposed to be funny. I get it was trying to be a think piece, but as I watched this every time it got serious, I was like so this ISN'T a comedy??? It was shot nicely, I'll give it that, but as my fiance and I looked up the movie, we really felt like we had to have been watching the wrong movie, cause everyone else seems to think this is the best piece of media ever, and we just didn't get that... Favorite part of the movie was when I went "omg who wrote this??? Oh yea... you guys" That gave me a lil bit of a chuckle
New York Times
Natalia Winkelman
Tales of angsty alpha males who see the light are a cinematic sacred cow, yet lacking in clarity of vision or a cohesive world, "The Beta Test" comes out looking as confused as its antihero.
The Playlist
Rodrigo Perez
Overall, Cummings and McCabe's film touches a raw nerve with sharp, funny, awkwardly prickly provocation.
C-Ville (VA)
Deirdre Crimmins
The Beta Test is an entertaining exercise in watching a self-involved Hollywood player slowly come to the realization that he is neither all-powerful nor all-knowing.
Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
Dennis Schwartz
I think it's best suited for those who could handle American Psycho.
eFilmCritic.com
Erik Childress
The only person I want to see having a nervous breakdown in public to protect their own entitlement is Jim Cummings and The Beta Test is another exhibit that he is a talent worthy of your attention.
Looper.com
Matthew Jackson
The Beta Test is one of those films that makes you squirm in your seat as often as it makes you howl with laughter, with a voice and point of view that feels like it could only come from this particular filmmaking team.
ScullyVision
Dan Scully
Mixes workplace comedy, erotic thriller, and Hollywood satire to great effect.
48 Hills
Dennis Harvey
These three Cummings movies to date, while toying with different genres, have been so essentially similar one fears his bag o' tricks might empty out soon. Still, it hasn't yet, and he's really got something...
FilmWeek (LAist)
Claudia Puig
It is a really great Hollywood satire that I found amusing.
RogerEbert.com
Matt Zoller Seitz
Cummings and co-director/co-star PJ McCabe are more adept at maintaining tone than a lot of better-known filmmakers.
The Reveal (Substack)
Scott Tobias
An unstable and unfocused satire that dabbles haphazardly in issues of masculinity, temptation, digital identity, and reformed workplaces but does so with a brio that keeps it on edge.
AV Club
Katie Rife
The results won't help McCabe and Cummings land any well-paying sellout gigs any time soon. But if being a Hollywood insider is anything like it appears in this movie, is that really such a loss?
Los Angeles Times
Carlos Aguilar
"The Beta Test" hinges on Cummings' magnetically deranged turn.
Detroit News
Adam Graham
Cummings is a voice all his own, and in "The Beta Test" he makes sure that voice is heard.
Austin Chronicle
Trace Sauveur
The main targets here are clear as day, and they're lined up cleanly in the crosshairs to be hit square in the chest.
TheWrap
Elizabeth Weitzman
Would have been stronger if they'd honed their furious focus even further. Instead, it feels like two films mashed together - a shaky thriller built on a vague social-media theme, set inside an incisive and genuinely disturbing industry satire.
IndieWire
David Ehrlich
In a film that barely has a grasp over its own hare-brained conspiracy and often feels like an extension of the mental breakdown that its protagonist might be suffering, Cummings' performance adds a key measure of consistency.
Slant Magazine
Chuck Bowen
Underneath the film's seeming casualness is an astute portrait of alcoholism, as well as a knowing glimpse of how micro tensions affect macro power plays, from pissing contests between men to sexual violations.
The Hollywood Reporter
John DeFore
The movie's imagining of business plans built on the massive harvesting of personal data is only half-convincing. But that's no big obstacle to the story it tells...
