⭐⭐⭐⭐½ – The Banker — Progress Earned, Inequality Exposed The Banker is a powerful and thoughtful film, telling the story of two men who challenge entrenched systems in 1950s and 60s America in order to build wealth and opportunity as men of colour. It’s both an inspiring biopic and an uncomfortable reminder of how deliberately stacked the deck once was — and, in some ways, still is. Watching this from the perspective of someone who grew up in a country without segregation laws gives the story extra weight. The idea that explicit legal barriers could prevent people from achieving success purely because of race feels deeply at odds with America’s self-image as the “land of the free.” The film makes it impossible to ignore how unfair, stifling, and unfree that reality truly was. What’s most striking is the dual effect the film leaves you with. On one hand, it shows just how far the U.S. has come since that era. On the other, it quietly highlights how many of those structural problems still echo today. By the time the credits roll, it’s hard not to ask yourself why so much of this still feels familiar. The performances anchor everything. Samuel L. Jackson brings his usual presence and edge, while Anthony Mackie delivers a controlled, determined turn that grounds the film emotionally. Together, they make the struggle feel personal rather than abstract. The Banker isn’t just an engaging historical drama — it’s a film that invites reflection long after it ends. It entertains, educates, and unsettles in equal measure, and that combination makes it one of the more impactful biopics of recent years. 🥃 Pairing: A neat bourbon — smooth, weighty, and best sipped slowly while you sit with the thoughts it leaves behind.
