A movie similar in style to the Witch 2019 but not as cool. This is not that kind of horror which uses jumpscares like Conjuring. If you like movies which get through the story with a slow pace and focus on the sins of characters and religion rather than introducing a supernatural evil then this is most likely your cup of tea. But if you like a more adventurous and exciting approach, this movie will make you bored and its story is forgettable and i wouldn't call this a horror movie.

"The Banishing" loses its nerve and succumbs to commonplace plot devices rather than going for the jugular. Still, Smith and Findlay make it watchable.

Can a 30-second scene right at the tail-end of a motion picture derail what had been up to that point 90 minutes of solidly creepy, emotionally authentic old-school haunted house fun?

"The Banishing" reminds us that sometimes we're forced to answer for the sins of others, too.

It's got some good scares. It's one of those that you wouldn't want to watch with the lights all turned down.

We've seen variations on this character before, but any time Harry's onscreen, The Banishing feels a little less stuffy, and while Brown Findlay gives it her all, you can't help but wish the story was more focused on Harry rather than Marianne.

It's a slow burn to an oddly satisfying crescendo for those tired of genre formats resting comfortably and trampled story laurels.

All of which sure sounds like a great time, and in many ways, it can be. But the incoherence grows more grating as the movie shuffles along...

The Banishing is a relatively straightforward haunted house story that excels in exploring character psychology.
Assignment X
Abbie Bernstein
It treads a familiar path, but it's decently scary.

The Banishing is eerie and unnerving and looks absolutely terrific.

"The Banishing" ends with such a walloping undertow of "wait, that's it?" that it earns little more than the backhanded compliment of realizing you expected a lot more from it.

The Banishing is eerie and entertaining, walking in the steps of films like The Queen of Black Magic or The Ring, but with its own patient gait.

It's a handsomely produced film with almost no explicit violence, yet some truly unsettling moments-most of them involving sinister monks, and mirrors that do not work like mirrors are supposed to.

Sadly, all of the intriguing feminist critique is overwhelmed by an unnecessary subplot involving the rise of Nazi fascism, the Church's secret ties to Germany, the sordid history of the house and other nonsense.

The Banishing is a haunting mystery rooted in a family drama.

"The Banishing" never finds its groove.

There are too many times when it feels like The Banishing needed to go Full Argento and Smith is too cautious a filmmaker to do so. It's dull when it needed to be terrifyingly confrontational.

The Banishing is valiant in its effort, honoring the roots of gothic horror, but something goes wrong along the way. They forgot the lights, they forgot the focus, and they forgot the scares.
Bloody Disgusting
Meagan Navarro
Psychological time loops, an eerie mirror, and nightmarish hallucinations are all bolstered by stunning cinematography and off-kilter camerawork to bring genuine scares, even in an overly crowded story.
