The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Ratings & Reviews
Manuel Frangis
April 15, 2025
I just watched The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and I give it 5 out of 5 stars. I know this one gets mixed reviews, but for me, this movie is everything I love about Spider-Man. It is emotional, bold, visually stunning, and full of heart. It takes some big swings, and I respect the way it leans all the way into its story. This is not just a superhero movie. It is a story about love, loss, responsibility, and what it means to keep going when everything feels like it is falling apart. Andrew Garfield once again delivers an incredible performance as Peter Parker. He plays Peter with so much heart and emotion. He is still trying to figure it all out. He is still dealing with the promise he made to Gwen’s father. He is carrying guilt, holding onto love, and trying to be the hero New York needs without losing the people he cares about. You can feel the weight on his shoulders, and Garfield makes it all feel real. His version of Spider-Man is funny, fast, and full of life, but when he is Peter, there is a vulnerability that hits hard. Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy is just as strong. The chemistry between her and Garfield is electric. Every scene they share feels natural and heartfelt. You believe in their connection completely. Gwen is smart, brave, and determined. She is not a side character. She is a huge part of this movie’s emotional core. The story takes their relationship seriously, and it is handled with care and purpose. Visually, this movie is stunning. The way Spider-Man moves, the way the camera follows him as he swings through the city — it is beautiful. The action scenes are big and exciting, but they still have weight. The Times Square scene is one of the best action sequences in any Spider-Man movie. The use of slow motion, the music, the danger — it is intense and unforgettable. The way the colors pop and the city lights up around him adds a whole other layer of energy to everything. The villains in this one are more complex than they get credit for. Jamie Foxx as Electro is tragic and intense. You feel bad for Max Dillon before he becomes Electro. He just wants to be seen, and when he finally gets power, it twists him. His design, the way the electricity moves around him, the way he talks through the speakers — it is all visually awesome. Harry Osborn’s arc is rushed, but Dane DeHaan brings a dark edge that works with the tone of the story. His scenes with Peter are complicated, and the tension feels earned. The music is also a standout. Hans Zimmer’s score is big, emotional, and fits the tone perfectly. The themes stick with you, and when the emotional moments come, the music lifts them to another level. The soundtrack becomes part of the storytelling in a way that makes this movie feel larger than life. I give The Amazing Spider-Man 2 5 out of 5 stars because it made me feel everything. It is exciting, heartbreaking, and full of passion. It is not afraid to take risks, and that is what makes it special. Overall The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a bold and emotional ride that digs deep into what it means to be a hero. It is beautiful, intense, and unforgettable. I loved every second of it.

It's fun. It's still 142 minutes long, which it doesn't need to be.
The Atlantic
David Sims
Over-stuffed with plot and consequently struggles to invest the audience in any of it, since there's so much to get through and so many future films and spinoffs to set up.
Flavorwire
Jason Bailey
'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' will certainly make a bazillion dollars, but after you sit through it - all 142 minutes of it - it's very hard to work up a compelling reason that it needed to exist, aside from the aforementioned bazillion dollars.
The New Yorker
Anthony Lane
Despite the efforts of Electro, the franchise is running shockingly low on juice.
The Atlantic
Christopher Orr
About the best thing one can say about this fiasco is that Webb has taken only two films to reach the same exhausted, exhausting endpoint that Raimi required three to achieve. It's progress, of a sort.

This is a movie that needs to remove a piece of jewelry.
Denver Post

The trouble with director Marc Webb's disappointing sequel is it wants to have it both ways: to take seriously human connection and loss and also spin the spectacular and pulpy... Spider-Man 2 never locates that sweet spot.
Grantland
Wesley Morris
The studios and the producers have to split the difference -- between excellence and adequacy, between darkness and light, between seriousness and fun. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 might have been split too far. It doesn't taste like anything.

I think I'll pass on The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
IndieWire
Eric Kohn
At just under two and a half hours, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" isn't just a raucous good time; it's several of them, pitched to as many different audiences, constantly at war with one another.
Dallas Morning News
Robert Wilonsky
When Garfield conceals Peter's confused-angry- betrayed scowl beneath that shiny red mask, Spider-Man 2 summons the giddy derring-do of the best Iron Man offerings. It's a good movie that could have been great.
Christian Science Monitor
Peter Rainer
Andrew Garfield, returning as Peter Parker, remains ingratiatingly jittery. You can believe that this kid, never at rest, could instantly transform himself into Spider-Man. He matches up well with Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy.
Wall Street Journal
Joe Morgenstern
How bad is this one ...? Amazingly so. Villainy abounds, but the villains are strident contrivances. Spider-Man flies, but does so dutifully, without joy.
San Diego Reader
Matthew Lickona
Every personal crisis seems to serve the action, and the drama is bloated and blunted because of it.
Chicago Reader
J. R. Jones
Amazing is a word so overused it no longer has any impact, which makes it the perfect adjective for this second installment of the second franchise based on the Marvel Comics superhero.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Joe Williams
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is easy to watch but hard to pin down, like a creature with eight legs going in different directions.
Washington Post
Ann Hornaday
An unforgivably long assemblage that never coalesces into a compelling story.
Austin Chronicle
Marjorie Baumgarten
It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what's wrong with The Amazing Spider-Man 2. There just seems to be too much of it.
The New Republic
Isaac Chotiner
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is not a new approach to the same old formula: no, it is basically a remake of other recent and derivative films.
