The Addams Family 2
Directed by Greg Tiernan, Conrad Vernon- RichardOctober 5, 2025This one’s a bit uneven, but I still found myself enjoying parts of it more than I expected. It leans into the road trip setup, Gomez trying to reconnect with Wednesday by dragging the whole family across America in a haunted RV. It’s chaotic, loud and full of random detours, but underneath all the slapstick and weirdness, there’s a decent thread about growing up and feeling out of place. Wednesday’s identity crisis gives the story a little more weight, even if it doesn’t go very deep. The humor’s hit or miss. Some of it’s clearly aimed at younger kids and a few gags feel like they were pulled straight from a checklist. But there are moments, especially with Wednesday’s dry sarcasm and Uncle Fester’s bizarre antics that actually land. Still, there’s something likable about it. It doesn’t try to reinvent the Addams Family, but it doesn’t totally phone it in either. It’s weird, it’s messy and it has just enough heart to make it worth the ride, even if it doesn’t stick with you long after.
- ShaydeknightNovember 9, 2025Not as good as the first animated film, but still decent. This one leans heavily on Wednesday, with everyone else fading into supporting roles. The plot isn't especially compelling, but it stays true to the Addams Family spirit, that gleeful collision between the darkly eccentric and the aggressively normal. Seeing the family alongside "regular" people still brings laughs, even if the novelty has dulled a bit. The larger question for me is whether the Addams Family still works as a concept. Their charm has always come from being outsiders: weird, macabre, and defiantly different. But in today's culture, being "unique" has practically become a social requirement. Ever since the neo-Goth wave of the 1980s (born partly from the Addamses' own pop-cultural aftershocks) we've lived in a world where darkness and quirkiness are fashion statements, not taboos. Remember, Siouxie Sioux coined the term Gothic in its modern sense, and from there came Anne Rice, Hot Topic, Tim Burton, and countless reboots of the Universal Monsters. In that context, the Addams message of strangeness and uniqueness simply doesn't hit the way it once did. In the 50s and 60s, conformity was the default and being weird was a genuine rebellion. Today, everyone wants to be part of a micro-tribe or subculture, to express individuality through ever-narrower distinctions. The Addams Family's uniqueness used to be countercultural, now it's practically aspirational. So yes, The Addams Family 2 is fine. It's funny in moments, faithful to the brand, and family-friendly. But maybe the world has caught up to them and that's why, despite all its polish, the film feels a little hollow.
