- ርልዪረ28 settembre 2025Long before the 2006 CGI laden graphic retelling of the battle of Thermpoylae in the movie "300", there was this, the original 1962 "Sword and Sandels" version of the Battle of Thermpoylae in the movie "300 Spartans". Starring Richard Egan, along with a huge cast of extras as was the case in these "Sword and Sandels" epics, this is a live action movie, so anyone expecting the bloody Blue Screen violence of "300" will be deeply disapointed, and the characters aren't as fully fleshed out and instantly likeable as in the graphic 2006 version, but this was the 1960's after all. If you can get past that then the movie is a really enjoyable watch. The story remains the same, as Greek/Spartan King Leonidis leads a small force of 300 Spartan Warriors against the overwhelming numbers of the invading Persian Army in an attempt to delay the Persian advance just long enough for the rest of Greece to rise up in arms. The Battle scenes are well done and those who have seen "300" will surely recognise all the elements in this movie that would be used in the modern retelling. "300 Spartans" isn't Spartacus in size or scale, and it isn't one of the most popular "Sword and Sandels" epics, but it's a faithful retelling of the Battle of Thermpoylae and very well done. It's battle harden, terrific fun.
