After World War II, television returned to British screens on 7 June 1946. 'Demonstration Film: Television is Here Again' showed viewers what they could expect. There were no Graphic designers as such until the end of the 1950s, when John Sewell was employed, the first art school graduate from the Royal College of Art to be recruited. Before that the embryonic graphic design department employed sign-writers who hand lettered programme titles on card which were then superimposed over the opening shots.
