There are many great movies that come from countries that no longer exist, and few extinct countries have a filmography quite as rock-solid as that of Yugoslavia. One of the country's greatest and most underappreciated horrors is the dark comedy Strangler vs. Strangler, set in Belgrade in the 1980s. It's about a florist who goes on a murder spree, and while the cops try to stop him, an aspiring musician finds his life deeply intertwined with that of the killer. Exquisitely funky and cleverly satirical, Strangler vs. Strangler is cinematic horror at its most punk rock. Its deadpan sense of humor serves the story extraordinarily well, never detracting any seriousness from the way the film studies and deconstructs the very concept of misogyny. It's a hysterical, intelligent explosion of genres that should be sought out by all those who love horror comedies.
