While the SG-1 series did a great job giving background details as to where the Stargates and the Goa'uld come from, this fills that small sliver as to what happened just before the Stargate was packed away, after it was found. With a cast that does a great job of carrying on the traditions and lore of the Stargate universe, the story told does feel forced at times but ultimately does a good job. The effects are the same as you would see in any other Stargate show/movie, so don't expect much novelty there.
