Sitting in Bars with Cake Ratings & Reviews

In 2013, Audrey Shulman decided to take 50 cakes to bars around Los Angeles in hopes of finding a boyfriend. In the middle of the project, her best friend Chrissy was diagnosed with brain cancer. Chrissy insisted they continue "cakebarring" throughout her treatment, convinced it would lead to something. 👆🏻This is the post script of the film. It’s also literally the plot of the film. Thought that was an odd choice. Odd that they changed the character’s names also. The film itself has all the hallmarks of a Hallmark movie. Heartwarming true story, low budget, with a sort of glossy finish. Was fully expecting this to be a tear jerker, but I ended up making it through dry eyed. This came off as a rather flat experience for my taste, but it’s a reasonably well executed film. My mom will probably enjoy it.

Better than it sounds, thanks to terrific performances and a perceptive screenplay.
Arizona Republic

It's refreshing to see a beautiful, character-driven story that feels small, but oh-so relatable.
Common Sense Media
Jennifer Green
Before that, Sitting in Bars with Cake's first 25-ish minutes come across as a comedy without any real depth or purpose, just beautiful people having fun.
Variety
Amy Nicholson
It's lucky that A'zion, as the cancer-stricken friend, pulls our attention away from the titular plotline until we practically forget the film claims to care about baked goods.

For the movie adaptation, Shulman shifts the dating focus as secondary to the very human bond between the roommates. How Generation Z finds their way in becoming the people they want to be is a major aspect of the story, and a good one to endear them

The best thing about Sitting in Bars with Cake is that the friendship at the centre of things feels real and genuine enough to pull tears from the viewer.

Shahadi and A'zion are part of what makes this movie better than it should be. These actresses embody their characters and have such a presence and chemistry that they make the bond between Jane and Corrine realistic.

The subject-matter can be heart-wrenching, but they keep it fun and light.
The Spool

The story is so prepared to bite into the more serious second half that it makes the livelier first artificial. But perhaps it's in this readiness that Sitting in Bars with Cake is the most punctual and careful for the task of piping out key tearjerkers.
The MacGuffin

The film does have its qualities, and for that I'm giving a recommendation. I just have this nagging suspicion that there is a deeper, more insightful movie hidden here.
Paul's Trip to the Movies

Sitting in Bars with Cake has all the right ingredients for an endearing film, but the proportions are off.
Denton Record-Chronicle
Preston Barta
Complete with raw performances and true-to-life dialogue, it's an experience that allows you to feel and recognize the beauty of friendship, even in the smallest moments. Those willing to invite it stand to reap the rewards.
Decider
Liz Kocan
Sitting In Bars With Cake is a classic death-of-a-best-friend movie that's got humor and heart, and just the right amount of sweetness.
Third Coast Review
Steven Prokopy
No one was more stunned than I was by how much I ultimately enjoyed this movie despite a rocky start. Give it a shot and then stick with it. Much like the characters, it improves with age.
Capital Times (Madison, WI)
Rob Thomas
The movie manages to combine a sharp, well-written comedy with a touching drama about friendship under a nearly impossible stress test, with terrific performances and an appealingly understated authenticity.
Nuha Hassan (Medium)

The real emotional moments in the film belong to Corinne and Jane's friendship, which has several tear-jerking scenes. Sitting in Bars with Cake is a flavourful, divinely themed film that deserves a taste.

"Cakebarring" is still a mystery (although the cakes created by Potthoff are outrageous-looking and cool), and what it provides Jane initially is not clear. But the friendship story is touching and real.
Chicago Tribune
Michael Phillips
Sitting in Bars with Cake creates a story, from ingredients that won't strike anyone as radically fresh, transcending formula and focused, smartly, on a moving story of a friendship, brought to life by Yara Shahidi and Odessa A'zion.

You probably don't need me to tell you how this movie ends, but Sitting in Bars with Cake is still worth tasting.
