Silent Night Ratings & Reviews

My quick rating - 5.6/10. I always like it when a movie, especially horror just jumps right in feet first and will take the time to get to the plot after the killings start. Ok, for some movies that is. For this one, it works well. This is a pretty ambitious movie that I think overshot expectations a bit. The story is quite simplistic, Santa is on a killing spree seemingly at random. It doesn't take long to see there is a method to his madness though. Along the way, Malcolm McDowell plays the town sheriff who is the stereotypical small-town cop. The camerawork is what makes this movie really stand out. There is a really well-made flashback scene to help further along the killer's motives using the black and white with solid accents on the bright colors (think Santa and you'll get it) that almost sticks out as in the wrong movie. And our murderous St. Nick has no qualms about dispatching of his victims in brutal fashion leaving nothing to the imagination. Making sure to hit the tropes, expect some boobs which is partly for the plot and the other part obvious. The dialogue will also be par for the course and is very tongue-in-cheek throughout. It is just a nice way to bring an old-school slasher-type film in for the holidays without trying to be anything different but a straight-up Santa slaughter-fest. As far as this being a remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night, I have to say I have to watch the original again. I don't recall it having anything resembling a plot. And I know for a fact it didn't look this good.
Los Angeles Times

The movie's intended audience will likely be satisfied by its parade of gory mayhem, cheap thrills and groan-worthy dark humor. Everyone else: You're on your own.
New York Times
Jeannette Catsoulis
This brisk reimagining of the 1984 slasher "Silent Night, Deadly Night" delivers the seasonal goods with admirable efficiency and not a little wit.

William Bibbiani
It doesn't betray the legacy of Silent Night, Deadly Night, but it doesn't add anything to it either. Ho-ho-hum.
Big Hollywood

Santa slasher flick sticks to genre template while Jaime King works overtime to make us care about the person gunning for ol' St. Nick.

This holiday season, horror fans should be sure to unwrap Steven C. Miller's Silent Night for an unexpected holiday treat, even if it's not all mistletoe and sweet candy canes.
FEARnet

This scrappy little remake is somehow more entertaining than half of what passes for "wide release" horror movies.
Variety
Joe Leydon
Apart from some modestly inventive carnage and an undeniably humorous hambone turn by Malcolm McDowell, there's really nothing here to make genre fans dash through the snow (or maneuver through traffic) to megaplexes.

Fans of nearly nude women being fed into wood chippers will not go home disappointed (except, very likely, in their hollow lives.)
The Hollywood Reporter
Frank Scheck
This unimaginative remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night continues the trend of mediocre remakes of '80s era horror films.
Cinema Crazed

By no means a masterpiece, but it's a damn good time with a great villain who spares no one...
Film School Rejects
Rob Hunter
Steven C. Miller's remake of the nasty 80s original keeps the violence and mayhem but adds both personality and humor with the result being a fun slasher that vastly improves on Silent Night, Deadly Night.
The Wolfman Cometh
Patrick Cavanaugh
While it might look a bit more polished than the original 1984, there's nothing deeper than surface-level sleaze.
Midwest Film Journal
Nick Rogers
Even after 20 years stashed away in dusty boxes, the franchise could still be festive.
