A bit of a slow goer but if you like your western that way, this one is for you! I see folks here saying there's no plot, it's talky or it's an acid western. I would say no to all of those. This is a hangout western for sure but there is a decent plot. Add to it some top-shelf camera work and a murderer's row cast. Margot Kidder, the same year as Superman's release, is stunning. Christoper Walken playing it straight. He's pretty great as the straight-as-an-arrow gentleman gunslinger in a Bolero hat. A Martinez with his shirt off and he's a specimen. The real lead of the film is Geoffrey Lewis - during the time he was in nearly every Eastwood movie released - who steals the film from everyone with his quirky, sunburned bad man. It was a treat to see him given so much screen time.

The major problem with Shoot the Sun Down isn't that it's saying something we've already heard, but that it's just not saying much at all.

The movie as a whole is hamfistedly whimsical and poetic, but Walken and Kidder are fascinating to watch.
