┌( ͝° ͜ʖ͡°)=ε/̵͇̿̿/’̿’̿ ̿ You can easily see why the critics had such a hard time reviewing this film... The action is so over the top. But then this is EXACTLY why I wanted to purchase and watch this very film. The action is the best thing about it, as promised. This film will never be Jane Austen, it will never be Aliens... It is itself, a wry, knowing, tongue-in-cheek , non-stop-romp through the the ways to shoot and be shot, with, of course, a little humour. The plot works as a vehicle with which to hang the action on... What more do you want ? If I can watch Arnie, Sly and Segal batter people and blow them up with little acting skill yet become natural-born-artists when in a dodgy situation that involves killing and or lots of guns. The modern production values and camera angles provide a great deal of amusement and the idea that we enjoy not only the shooting but the choreographed nature of the killing brings great pleasure... If the final battles in Kill Bill bore you through repetetiveness then that does not happen here. Each killing zone is perfectly planned and different from the last; and also perfect in its method of killing. So to sum up... ever get the feeling hollywood films had lost the plot on violence ? Well here's the antidote..... Just sit back, watch and enjoy some of the crazyiest and most enjoyable shooting scenes ever committed to celluloid

Giamatti plays his villain role with a purring fervency that implies he wishes he had a properly twirlable mustache.

Say what you will about Bugs Bunny, at least he never needed a backstory.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
For the most part, this is strictly kiss kiss, bang bang, yawn yawn.
Associated Press
Christy Lemire
After about an hour, though, it all becomes a mind-numbing barrage.
Chicago Reader

One can certainly be amused and entertained by writer-director Michael Davis's hyperbolic action frolics -- I was -- but not without feeling pretty low and stupid.
Film.com
Mark Bourne
...an affectionate, often very funny Simpsons parody of its whole eponymous genre. It's a live-action McBane as co-directed by Quentin Tarantino and Chuck Jones.... Shoot 'Em Up is Hot Fuzz gone to the Dark Side.
Washington Post
Stephen Hunter
It's just gunfights strung together, without a whisper of coherence or meaning.
Ebert & Roeper
Richard Roeper
A big bloody disappointment.
Salon.com
Stephanie Zacharek
The sum of the movie's exploding parts adds up to nothing -- not even just good, sick fun.

Fully dedicated to finding newer and more creative ways to annihilate countless bad guys, Michael Davis' ultimate guy movie isn't just testosterone-heavy, it's doused with it, sprayed with diesel, and set ablaze.
New York Post
Lou Lumenick
You know Quentin Tarantino is probably over the hill when he can be so parodied with such deadly precision in Shoot 'Em Up.
San Francisco Chronicle
Ruthe Stein
Even more distressing is the presence of Owen and Paul Giamatti. I understand the concept of working as much as possible while you're hot, but it's a slippery slope.
USA Today
Claudia Puig
For mainstream audiences, its whiplash pacing, frenetic camera work and offhand manner toward blood spillage probably will be disturbing.
Seattle Times
Ted Fry
Jaw-dropping only hints at the reaction to the intricately staged fights, especially a shootout between Smith and a dozen or so villains as they step out of a jet and plummet toward Earth sans parachutes.
Detroit News
Tom Long
Bang. Bang. Bang-bang blood, blood, blood. There, you've seen the movie.
Detroit Free Press
Terry Lawson
The ultimate target audience will undoubtedly have the added benefit of libations.
New York Daily News
Jack Mathews
This is likely the fastest-moving intentionally funny action movie ever made.
Los Angeles Times
Kevin Crust
Over-the-top doesn't begin to describe Shoot 'Em Up's set-pieces, most of which are undeniably entertaining.
Houston Chronicle
Amy Biancolli
Like Quentin Tarantino without the aesthetic posturing, the film is giddy with pop references -- and embraces the sloshy fun of exploitation genre-tweaking...
