We glamorize pixels, follow avatars, and wouldn’t blink if our favorite star turned out to be a well-trained neural net with a killer PR team. Al Pacino, of all people, plays the desperate director behind the digital diva. And somehow, it works. Watching him navigate the absurdity of fame, illusion, and tech-induced chaos is oddly satisfying—like watching Shakespeare do a TikTok dance and somehow nail it. Sure, the movie has its flaws. It’s campy, uneven, and occasionally feels like it’s trying to explain the internet to your grandparents. But judged by the tech landscape of its time, it was disturbingly ahead of the curve. The only thing it didn’t do was let the virtual character gain sentience—which, let’s be honest, might’ve turned it into Ex Machina with better lighting.
