- Kevin WardJuly 2, 2025An enjoyable (if forgettable) animated family adventure. The animation isn’t a striking or stylized as some of Dreamworks other recent pictures. The kraken have a very cartoonish look, even as compared to the human characters in the world. Still it’s a cute take on the coming-of-age-monster-transformation trope (see Teen Wolf, Turning Red, etc) I really enjoyed the dynamic Ruby has with her friends and also the budding relationship with her crush, Connor. Some of the sweetest moments of the film come from their interactions. Messages about honesty between parents and children are touched on in the with between Ruby and her mother, who had hid this family secret from Ruby for years. It’s a children’s movie though, and the story eventually turns into a supernatural battle for a mythical thing that imbues it’s possessor with tremendous power. The films flips the script of The Little Mermaid when it comes the mermaid-kraken antagonism. That was about the only interesting aspect of the culminating battle. Ruby Gilman: Teenage Kraken is a solid family adventure drama. I don’t see it being a monster hit, but my 12 year old daughter and I enjoyed our time.
