Event Horizon (1997), on the other hand, earns its horror through atmosphere, dread, and characters who fracture in real time—Captain Miller burns with guilt, Dr. Weir unravels into something unrecognizable, while Alice just reloads and moves to the next lifeless set piece. Even the Umbrella Corporation’s evil feels like a cartoon next to the cold, clinical malice of the gravity drive—one film drags you to hell screaming, the other feels like a cosplay photoshoot that ran too long.

Their charisma and slo-mo half of the film were the only things helping me carry on, albeit not painlessly. It's not horrible, and if you take it for the dumb action entertainment it's meant to be, you may still get a good time out of it, but there ain't no there *there*, either.

- makdelart6 dage sidenNothing better than the previous three instalments. They’ve thrown in a bit of Matrix-style inspiration for a change, but the whole thing is let down (as is typical of this franchise) by the poor quality of the CGI. At least the film is short.

Visually, it's an upgrade - the 3D effects, slow-motion gunfights, and moody cinematography give the movie a slick, almost video-game-like energy. Milla Jovovich still commands attention as Alice, delivering her trademark cool presence and action prowess, and the soundtrack complements the intensity with a solid industrial edge. However, beneath all that spectacle lies a messy and shallow narrative. The story doesn't do much to advance the overarching plot, instead recycling familiar beats and clichés. Characters come and go with little impact, and the pacing often feels uneven - moments of tension are too quickly drowned in exaggerated action. Overall, "Resident Evil: Afterlife" isn't terrible, but it's far from great. It's entertaining enough for fans of the series, yet it marks another entry where visual flair can't quite hide the lack of depth.
