- The Gutter MonkeyFebruary 23, 2025A small indie that shouldn't be special. But the characters, dialogue, and style flip the mediocre to iconic.
- romandini3May 10, 2025Absolute perfection. Tarantino's choices of actors and writing are impeccable. There is no weak point in this story. It is funny, clever, badass and brutally real all at the same time.
- cultfilmlikerJuly 4, 2025“You kill anybody?” “A few cops.” “No real people?” “Just cops.” Is this the same warehouse from Saw????
- EvilbeastyJuly 4, 2025One of the Greatest heist movies. Made the song stuck in the middle with you an instant classic. A must watch.
- Jacob O’NealJuly 4, 2025Today we lost the great Michael Madsen, so I thought I would revisit my personal favorite performance of his - Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs. It also happened to be Quentin Tarantino’s debut as a filmmaker and the catalyst for how the 1990’s changed my life. But we aren’t here to talk about my life. Here we go - Tarantino amassed some great older talent like Lawrence Tierney and Eddie Bunker, people with a little star power at the time like Harvey Keitel and some new to most talent like Madsen, Tim Roth, Chris Penn and Steve Buscemi. The cast was outstanding. The focus of the film being solely on the aftermath of a robbery gone wrong. It was a fresh approach to a heist/robbery movie. And it worked out perfectly for this film. In fact, I noticed something tonight I never noticed before. The focus is only on the crew’s faces in the opening round table shot. You don’t see the waitress clearly. The other patrons are out focus. You have nothing else to draw your attention away. They are the only important thing in the movie. It sets the stage so perfectly in the opening scene. But through the whole movie you may see a random bit player’s face for a second or two, but they’re not the focus…ever. Just the crew, until the hostage comes out. But then they put tape over his mouth, almost like what he has to say isn’t as important so only focus on the main characters. The only time we see a less closed off world is the flashback stuff with Tim Roth. Before he hooks up with Mr. White his world seems bigger. Once he’s working his way into the crew the world begins to become smaller, almost claustrophobic. This was Tarantino’s first film and he understood film language that well, and maybe not even totally in a conscious level. It was brilliant. Now onto Mr. Blonde. What is so great about Michael Madsen in this film is his restraint. He’s downright disturbing and one of those reasons is he’s in full control, totally calm and collected…even during the infamous ear severing scene. It’s chilling. Not since Christopher Walken have I seen someone as restrained and disturbing as Madsen was in this film. In fact, this scene worked so well while showing so little that there’s a rumor Wes Craven walked out of a screening when the scene came on because it was too much for him. And Madsen sold it with acting and a couple props he grabbed when camera panned away. Everything about the scene is masterful. But the scenes with Penn and Madsen in a flashback were great to show the bond and friendship they had. You see the lighter and less maniacal side of Mr. Blonde (aka Victor Vega, brother of John Travolta Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction). This is a near perfect film with some dialog some of the younger crowd that gets offended if they don’t have anything to get offended about will get offended. That’s a guarantee. Just watch and don’t judge. Appreciate the characters and not words if they offend. Now go watch Reservoir Dogs.
