Werner Herzog doesn’t glorify combat; he drops you straight into the suffocating reality of Dieter Dengler’s ordeal and never lets up. Christian Bale disappears into the role so completely that you stop seeing the actor and only see a man trying to survive. The film has great supporting performances, from Jeremy Davies, and Steve Zahn. What elevates the film to a masterpiece is how Herzog films each scene: the jungle isn’t just a backdrop it’s a living, breathing entity that’s both beautiful and merciless....... Fascinating story. I've heard Herzog's Biography "Little Dieter Needs to Fly" is better but haven't gotten around to watching it.
