[REC]³ Genesis Ratings & Reviews

The first two [REC] movies are some of the best you can experience from found footage. Not to interfere with what's been built, the third paves its own path. The film's decision to blend found footage with traditional filmmaking is an improvement. It starts with a classic found footage setup but transitions into traditional cinematography as the chaos unfolds. This switch not only allows for more dynamic and visually striking shots but also offers a welcome change of pace that keeps the film engaging. One of the unique aspects of this film is the departure from the traditional zombie archetype. Presented with different weaknesses than the standard such as unable to step onto holy grounds and frozen in place when scripture is read. This shift in zombie behavior injects a new level of interest into the film's numerous action sequences. The undead in [REC]³ are relentless, and their agility makes them a formidable threat to fear. The wedding setting is a brilliant choice, providing a stark contrast to the horror unfolding. The backdrop of the wedding celebration creates a tension filled juxtaposition between love and chaos. This dichotomy serves as a thematic underpinning, with the film exploring the lengths to which individuals will go to protect their loved ones, even in the face of unimaginable horror. [REC]³ is an exhilarating entry in the zombie genre that distinguishes itself through its unique take on the undead, its dynamic blend of found footage and traditional filmmaking, and offers a memorable experience that is both terrifying and oddly heartwarming. It's a wedding you won't soon forget.
New York Post
V.A. Musetto
Plaza throws in more than enough ludicrous touches of his own to grab viewers by their arteries and never let go.
New York Times
Jeannette Catsoulis
With slapstick smothering the scares, "[REC 3]" is further marred by a plot in which the muted Catholicism of its antecedents is turned up to full blast.
AV Club
Tasha Robinson
It's hard to maintain dread while the filmmakers are so obviously grinning at their own cleverness.
New York Daily News
Joe Neumaier
Like vampires, this genre is getting deadly.
Shockya.com
Perri Nemiroff
Perhaps Paco Plaza's fictional virus finally got to him because the fact that he thinks he can do away with found footage and horror in the third installment is downright bizarre.
Slant Magazine
Ed Gonzalez
If a fourth entry wasn't already in the works, [Rec] 3: Genesis could have easily represented the nail in the franchise's coffin.
Boxoffice Magazine
Nick Schager
An avalanche of unadventurous nastiness and moldy meta gags.

Brian Tallerico
This thing has a pulse. It may be pushing blood through a gushing jugular but it's beating.
Village Voice
Andrew Schenker
Giddy shots of the undead slogging through a decimated party-scape materialize the decadence and instability of upper-crust family life, even as groom and (pregnant) bride prepare to give birth to another generation of the Spanish elite.
Deep Focus Review
Brian Eggert
It's exceedingly gory, more so than its predecessors, and its lack of technical ingenuity and half-hearted use of the "found footage" device somehow makes it less interesting.
Film Journal International
Maitland McDonagh
Something of a disappointment, but serious genre fans and anyone who thrills to the idea of seeing cannibal zombies ruin a perfectly lovely wedding will check it out anyway
TheFilmFile.com
Dustin Putman
Doesn't come close to earning the revery of its moniker. This is one misbegotten deviation from the norm not worth repeating.
MovieMartyr.com
Jeremy Heilman
This decision to quarantine the shaky camerawork to the pre-credits exposition at once comes as an admission that the handheld cinematography is a gimmick and marks a slide into more conventional (i.e. dull) territory.
Aisle Seat
Mike McGranaghan
An awesomely crazy survival-horror joyride.
CraveOnline
William Bibbiani
One of the best horror movies of the year. Granted it's been a crap year for the genre so far, but a compliment is still a compliment.
PopMatters
Bill Gibron
If you recognize...that Plaza is going for something along the lines of Freddy vs. Jason and The Cabin in the Woods, you'll cheer for this well done bit of meta macabre.
Mania.com
Rob Vaux
Beyond the basic idea and the few clever gems that spawn from it, [REC] 3 doesn't improve on the formula much.
Blu-ray.com
Brian Orndorf
Extraordinarily entertaining, cheeky yet grim, and enjoyably stabilized, Genesis is fantastic horror hellraising, while once again pushing the series in a promising new direction.
The Wolfman Cometh
Patrick Cavanaugh
Lulls you into expecting a redundant experience in its opening minutes, only to entirely circumvent expectations while being as satisfying as its predecessors.
