Rebuilding Ratings & Reviews
Kevin Ward
June 30, 2025
Rebuilding is a somber and tender portrait of a man putting his life back together after disaster. Josh O’Connor plays Dusty, a reserved, recently divorced father whose ranch has gone up in flames. Now living in a FEMA trailer park and eyeing a move to Montana for steadier work, he sees himself as different from those around him—less uprooted, just passing through. But thanks to the gentle insistence of his ex-wife Meghann Fahy (wonderfully understated) and the irresistible charm of his daughter Callie Rose (Lily LaTorre, adorable beyond words), Dusty starts to realize there may be more left to salvage than he thought. That his familial roots are still there, begging to grow back, if he's willing to tend to them.

It's a well-acted, quiet and tender film, filled with tension.

There won't be enough story for some with this but I enjoyed it for what it is.
Vanyaland
Nick Johnston
There's a genuine sensitivity to the portrayal of post-catastrophe life that never makes it feel manipulative, thanks to the smart way in which Dusty and those around him grow throughout the film.
Next Best Picture
Ema Sasic
Walker-Silverman has helmed another heartwarming story that captures what it means to be human, what is most important in trying times, and how to pick up the shattered pieces around us.
Collider
Ross Bonaime
Rebuilding is a powerful showcase for both O'Connor and Walker-Silverman and a film that feels especially important for right now.
AV Club
Natalia Keogan
Rebuilding emphasizes the vitality of mutual aid.
Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack)
Ty Burr
Sincere to a fault, "Rebuilding" has great love for the vast Colorado panoramas and the people in them, and it brings the same empathy toward the kind of Americans who were once called "little people".
Slant Magazine
Marshall Shaffer
If there's any sense of motion in the film, which is largely defined by its patient camerawork and editing, it's in Dusty's gradual recognition of and response to the emotions that accompany his corporal yearning to remain in place.
InBetweenDrafts

But for all its meditative despair, Rebuilding doesn't lose sight of the decency fueling its redemption story.

As a filmmaker, Walker-Silverman's talents are letting a narrative unfold without pretense or melodrama. When the events are this powerful you don't need to ratchet up the stakes.

O'Connor is able to convey so much of Dusty's grief, helplessness, and isolation with few words.

It's a nuanced, character-driven drama about a man who almost looks like a ghost trying to find his human form again.
The Film Stage

Walker-Silverman embraces the solitude and shows us we're not truly alone, even if we may feel that way.
Screen Rant
Graeme Guttmann
Rebuilding is a restrained but powerful western drama with a stunning turn from Josh O'Connor as a cowboy who has lost everything after tragedy.
Deadline Hollywood Daily
Pete Hammond
In the end Rebuilding gives us faith and hope for the human race and its ability to overcome in the face of the worst life can throw at us. It's inspiring stuff.
IndieWire
David Ehrlich
Loath as I am to label anything as "the movie people need right now," it's hard to think of Max Walker-Silverman's "Rebuilding" in any other terms at the moment.
Variety
Owen Gleiberman
I found it to be a semi-dud, the sort of movie that's way too self-consciously austere, and then tries to take all that paced-like-Antonioni-on-a-saddle dryness and drown it in sentimentality.
The Hollywood Reporter
Sheri Linden
Walker-Silverman is a filmmaker who doesn't hew to formulaic arcs, and it would be a mistake to interpret quietness as tranquility or ease. Something more complex and rewarding than surface tension is at play here.
The Daily Beast
Nick Schager
A lyrical tale of combatting misfortune via community.
