Poor Things Ratings & Reviews
- Sam12h agothe nudity felt excessive and too male-gazey but my queen kathryn hunter was beyond reproach as always
- baumi373October 26, 2025One of the best films ever made. You have to watch it!
- rg9400November 1, 2024First off, the technicals. I have no trepidation in saying this is the technically most impressive movie of 2023. The visuals are sumptuous, some stills are painting worthy. The fisheye lens, the discordant score, the absurdist and beautifully detailed environments...everything is operating at an extremely high level. Special shoutout to the title cards that split up each section of the movie. In particular, that last one will live rent free in my head. The settings are just perfection. From the very first shot of the movie, you know you are in for an audiovisual feast. Secondly, the performances. Really, this movie starts and ends with Emma Stone. In the most competitive year for Best Actress that I can remember, she is the winner. She puts everything into this character, not just from a physicality point of view but also the way that her facial expressions and speech patterns transform throughout Bella's journey. It's definitely centered around her, but the supporting cast does an admirable job (Mark Ruffalo specifically) in tandem with her. Third, the plot. I think, if I were to criticize the movie, this might be the one area. The movie is 2.5 hours long, and it does drag a bit in a few sections. I thought one or two of them could have been slightly tighter to keep the pacing brisk. I am doing this just to nitpick though because the other sections were brilliant, and I absolutely loved them. Finally, themes. This is a movie about liberation, and it tackles it across a variety of different avenues. Seeing Bella's journey of self-discovery was fascinating, and it was equally fascinating to see how often certain elements tried to contain it. Utilizing this madcap version of the world to really accentuate those competing forces worked. This is the best movie of 2023. Just FYI, this is not a movie you see with family. At all. It is explicit. Extremely explicit. And weird. And absurd. And so good.
- AngelSeptember 9, 2025The boredom of an artist for whom beauty is a grotesque spectacle, driven by the simple desire to contemplate originality once more, without realizing that the viewer is not in the same state of mind. Perhaps if one loves the decomposition of creation—like a body rotting after death—they might enjoy what is presented in this tormented monstrosity.
- Kevin WardJuly 2, 2025It’s the most visually striking film of Yorgos’ that I’ve see. Production design, costumes, are all off the charts. Particularly loved the when we’d be treated to wide shots of the ship, the sunsets, the scenery etc. With regard to the story Yorgos certainly does his thing. It’s once against an absurdist fable highlights various absurdities of human behavior (or, “polite society” as it’s posited here). It is graphic and unapologetic in it’s depiction of female liberation (sexual liberation, in particular) and required an absolutely fearless performance from Emma Stone. She is utterly fantastic here and completely deserving of all the accolades she receives, whether or not that includes a second Oscar. I absolutely love whenever Lanthimos points his camera lens at humanity. “Why keep it in my mouth if it is revolting?” What social norms do we accept out of politeness? Is that why they exist in the first place or are some designed specifically as a means of control? His films are always thought provokingly weird and Poor Things is no exception. Loved it. Highly recommend (unless you’re looking for a family movie.
- MightgetcrazyAugust 5, 2025whoever got the idea, go see a therapist. please.
- darsanJune 23, 2025the wildest film i've ever seen.
- sopulaMay 29, 2025A fantastic epic in a weird aspect ratio. I loved it, Emma Stone was some how able to sell the extremely bizarre character, Mark Rufalo was hilarious
- The Gutter MonkeyMay 26, 2025I appreciated the unique premise and some of its bold choices. But the story ultimately felt boring to me.
- Amin RuckerFebruary 8, 2025Slow start but good watch!
- cinemacontracittaDecember 1, 2024kitsch redeemed.
- TanalienNovember 2, 2024Behind the artful and occasionally distasteful veneer of Poor Things is a simple coming-of-age story. As I have been warned, director Yorgos Lanthimos makes unconventional pictures. To me, Lanthimos seems uninterested in the usual or expected; he prefers the extremities of storytelling as in “If it can be done, why shouldn’t it be?”
- Eithan HopkinsFebruary 24, 2025Very odd film but somehow it kept me engaged throughout… would recommend an open mind if watching.
- VarunOctober 19, 2024Holy fuck this movie was crazy! Strangely gorgeous in every department, from the colour pallets of every scene, the set design, music score, costumes, characters and interactions. And god those title cards were mind bogglingly beautiful. Sometimes it’s hard to describe the feeling when you experience something truly unique and original. It also works because it’s highly entertaining with great wit, humour, wonder, melancholy and satire. Lots of great themes explored here as well. Emma Stone absolutely deserves a Best Actress Oscar for that complicated, engrossing and spectacular performance. This is also my favourite Mark Ruffalo performance. Bella and Duncan >>> Barbie and Ken. This is definitely one of the most visually appetising and delightfully weird movies I’ve ever seen. I found the plot amazing albeit with a few flaws. I think too much time was spent on the Paris sex worker section because you can figure out the lesson quickly but it drags on and Bella seems to stagnate in her learning journey. When it comes to sex work, I’ve understood much of the message from recent movies like Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022), Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022) and the latest tv show Blue Eye Samurai (2023), so I personally did find this section to tread on old ground for too long. I wanted to see Bella interact with more different communities, like they kept mentioning socialism and was bummed when I didn’t get to see her interact with any socialist workers or just politicians in general. I guess I wanted to see her make more of an impact on the world, it could’ve been like a Frankenstein’s monster turned into a radical, weird and cool version of Forest Gump. I also felt the pacing of the ending to be a bit slow. But yes I do realise most of my criticisms are based on my own desires and wishful thinking. I still really enjoyed the fuck out of this movie and I can’t recommend it enough. I will for sure be rewatching this one and checking out more of Yorgos Lanthimos’ films.
