Playhouse Ratings & Reviews
jackmeat
March 4, 2025
My quick rating - 3.3/10. "Reckless Jack Travis is an irreverent horror writer notorious for scaring audiences." That by far is better than the movie. There is nothing to suggest anything he does is scary. The movie does nothing to scare you. He wants to hole up in some haunted Scottish castle and the demons buried in the walls take over. Except none of that happens, just mere boredom and everyone yelling at each other for no apparent reason. Even the story they allude to isn't remotely frightening. Just overall poor movie that has some decent performances in it. It's most likely on VOD, and you should very much not waste your time.
Rue Morgue Magazine
Rocco T. Thompson
its forceful performances and penetrating atmosphere linger in the mind far longer than its less successful elements.
Dread Central
Paul Grammatico
If you are looking for a good throwback to a grand old gothic good time, Playhouse will be a dreadful delight.
One Guy's Opinion
Frank Swietek
A Gothic ghost story with oodles of atmosphere but too little tension and suspense.
Film Threat
Andrew Stover
Although Playhouse isn't as emotionally critical or tightly written as it should be, The Watts brothers are skilled in nurturing a dour atmosphere and exposing a darker side to the creative impulse.
Eye for Film
Jennie Kermode
Whilst unresolved mystery is part of the oeuvre of the Gothic, too much just results in a narrative muddle. This, ultimately, dooms the film, but not before they've succeeded in showing off their skills.
