- Kevin WardJuly 3, 2025Sometimes all aspects if a film production come together so perfectly, that it seems effortless—Elia Kazan’s direction, Kaufman’s cinematography, Leonard Bernstein’s score and winning performances from Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint. I’m only familiar with Brando’s later filmography, so this was a nice intro into seeing his early work that made him a star. A compelling crime drama following widespread corruption amongst the longshoremen’s unions on the waterfronts of New Jersey. Though it certainly had echoes of the McCarthyism of the era, more than anything it’s a timeless tale of standing up for what is right.
- Mister ArnMay 14, 2025Above-average drama with excellent performances by all the actors, it well worth watching.
- .LAGJune 18, 2025A demi-masterpiece. A bit melodramic. Maybe for my Internet-era sensibilities, this story felt more like a stage play on celluloid. The big story here is basic, well-crafted, and well-executed. And there are some really great acting performances throughout, from Eve Marie Saint, Karl Malden and, of course the legendary Marlon Brando... "I coulda been somebody, I coulda been a contender..." These older b/w films definitely leaned in more on the actors' talents, and the soundtracks... today (2025) the narrative gaps seems to be filled more by special f/x. Nevertheless, this film is worth studying, and appreciating.
