- ርልዪረ1. august 2025On the Buses is a powerful adaptation of a short story written by Leo Tolstoy called On the Troikas. The story explores the existential philosophy surrounding the lives of a group of intellectual free thinkers working within the 19th century Russian transport system. The main character Stanislas Butlerovich is a working class hero who is hounded and bullied incessantly by an authoritarian figure in the shape of Inspector Blakov. Many literary critics have compared the story favourably to Melville's Billy Budd. The whole concept is a metaphor for the struggle of liberalism against a dystopian establishment. The British sitcom captures the essence of Tolstoy's serious message, while at the same time achieving a brand of sardonic humour that lifts it to the pinnacle of creative art.
