- stevencaceres245July 7, 2025This is not the movie I thought it was going to be. Not that I knew what to expect, but it wasn’t what I expected. No spoilers, just watch it to the very end. Laugh and then cry, and then cry some more. Maoist Stella is great, just brilliant and traversing a difficult youth landscape, Percy Haynes White is so charming he makes you feel all of the feels. It takes you back to that pivotal summer we had. Those couple of months when you left your old friends, old life, behind. And when you came back, you had evolved somehow into a new, more expansive human. Watch the film. Then go and tell everyone you know that you love their ass…family, friends, and then remember to love yourself back.
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025This was an incredibly sweet watch. What would you ask your older self and what would you tell your younger self, if you had the opportunity? Maisy Stella is great in the lead, but this absolutely works best when Aubrey Plaza is on screen as well….which isn’t nearly enough, in my opinion. There’s a large chunk of the film where Aubrey is only present via a cell phone (sometimes voice, sometimes text) and it definitely feels like one of those situations where a small movie ran out of shooting time with their relatively big star. I don’t know if that’s the case, but it feels like it. But credit to director Megan Park for making it work, if it was. The film is an incredibly heartwarming story about cherishing the people you love, and not taking any moment for granted.
- Darcy BuchananJune 13, 2025I'm not really into romance movies but I really enjoyed this movie and it's made me want to watch more from this genre.
- TadMarch 13, 2025Hella cute, this movie made me feel all kinds of things. Great pacing, scenes never drag, and the narrative starts out engaging and continues all the way through.
- ayayronFebruary 15, 2025Particularly impactful in light of recent events
- RyezooFebruary 4, 2025This movie sold you Aubrey Plaza and in return you get her for about 15 minutes of screen time. Felt very middle of the road story. Nothing too special or rememberable.
- Christopher van GelderNovember 30, 2024It's a bit like 50 first dates, I enjoyed it
- SpoonsNovember 23, 2024Meeting your future self through a psychedelic trip is a wild concept, and My Old Ass delivers a fresh take on the coming-of-age genre. Directed by Megan Park, the film follows 18-year-old Elliott (Maisy Stella) as she navigates life, love, and identity with guidance from her 39-year-old self, played by Aubrey Plaza. The premise is gold—whether it’s their phone calls across timelines or the hilariously bizarre shroom-fueled meetings, these interactions are the film’s standout moments. Adding to its uniqueness is the twist on Elliott’s journey of self-discovery. Instead of a traditional coming-out story, Elliott has to explain her unexpected heterosexual relationship to her family and friends as a gay character. It’s a fascinating and rarely explored angle that adds depth to her struggles and growth. While the concept is brilliant, the film could have leaned harder into its high-concept elements. The scenes between Elliott and her older self are so engaging that I found myself wanting more of them—and, frankly, more of Aubrey Plaza. The dynamic between Stella’s teenage angst and Plaza’s sharp, witty performance is fantastic, but the film doesn’t quite capitalize on that potential as much as it could have. Still, My Old Ass is a heartfelt and funny exploration of identity and second chances. If you loved the quirkiness of Eighth Grade or the introspection of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, this film is well worth the watch.
