- Richard6d agoThis one’s for the true believers. Bruce Campbell plays Bruce Campbell, mistaken for Ash and dragged into a monster hunt in small town Oregon. It’s meta, it’s messy and it’s absolutely made for fans who know the difference between Deadite and Dirt Farmer. The plot? Barely. Guan-Di, a Chinese guardian spirit with a taste for beheadings, is unleashed and only Bruce (the actor, not the character) can save the day. Cue bad wigs, worse acting and a country theme song that sounds like it was recorded in a haunted karaoke bar. Campbell mugs through every scene like he’s trying to win a Razzie and a Saturn Award simultaneously. The humor is proudly juvenile, the effects charmingly cheap and the whole thing feels like a fan convention fever dream. If you’re not in on the joke, you’ll be lost. If you are? You’ll be grinning like a chainsaw wielding maniac. I saw it somewhere, probably on late night TV sandwiched between Slither and Bubba Ho-Tep. Bought the DVD later because, well, it felt wrong not to. It’s not a good movie. But it’s a good Bruce Campbell movie. And that’s a genre unto itself.
