Clarissa Dalloway looks back on her youth as she readies for a gathering at her house. The wife of a legislator and a doyenne of London's upper-crust party scene, Clarissa finds that the plight of ailing war veteran Septimus Warren Smith reminds her of a past romance with Peter Walsh. In flashbacks, young Clarissa explores her possibilities with Peter.

An exquisite movie about memories from long ago and a past that forever lingers. Sometimes we will never know what could have been, but we can dream of what was. A stunning cinematography of images that once were, and exceptional dialogue that echoes deep within Mrs. Dalloway like reflections from a golden pond. The life that Clarissa yearned for was not with Peter, but with Sally, now frozen in time. The film's restraint emphasizes the real life tragedy of missed opportunities. Unfortunately, the ending that we are waiting for never arrives. Septimus's story was an unnecessary and detached subplot that should have never been in the movie! A big mistake was to downplay the lesbian love story, and Virginia Woolf would not be pleased with this adaptation. I believe that Virginia Woolf was a suppressed lesbian, and this movie discredits a crucial part of her life that she never recovered from. MRS. DALLOWAY missed it's mark to be a time altering masterpiece! Even the cover of this movie is misleading, in order to appeal to a broader heterosexual audience! For you, Sally B.
