- Manuel FrangisMarch 21, 2025I just watched Mr. Popper’s Penguins and I would give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. This is a fun family comedy with a lot of silly moments and some heart but it does not quite reach the level of being a classic. It is entertaining for what it is but it feels like a movie that is more for kids than for everyone. The story follows Tom Popper a businessman who unexpectedly inherits a group of penguins that turn his life upside down. He goes from being all about work to dealing with a house full of crazy birds that cause chaos wherever they go. The concept is fun and leads to a lot of goofy moments but the overall story is pretty predictable. Jim Carrey is the best part of the movie. His performance is exactly what you expect from him with over the top reactions slapstick comedy and a ton of energy. He plays the straight laced businessman who slowly learns to enjoy life thanks to the penguins and he sells it well. Even though the script does not always give him the best material he still makes a lot of scenes funnier just with his expressions and delivery. The penguins themselves are adorable and full of personality. Even though they are mostly CGI they look good and have a lot of fun little quirks that make them stand out. Whether they are sliding around the apartment causing trouble or just doing their thing they bring a lot of the best moments in the movie. The humor is a mix of physical comedy penguin antics and some classic Jim Carrey moments. Some jokes work really well and others feel like they were made just to keep younger audiences entertained. If you like simple goofy humor you will probably enjoy it but if you are looking for something more clever it might not hit as well. The pacing is decent but some parts feel a little slow or dragged out. The movie has fun moments but there are also stretches where not much is happening. It is not boring but it could have been a little tighter to keep the energy going. One of the things I liked is that the movie does have a nice message about family and priorities. Even though it is mostly about the comedy there is a little bit of heart in there too. It does not go too deep but it gives the movie a little more weight than just being a bunch of penguin chaos. The reason I am giving it 3.5 instead of a higher rating is because while it is fun it does not really stand out. It is a solid family movie but not one that you would rush to rewatch. The humor is light the story is predictable and while the penguins are cute they are not enough to make this a must see movie. Overall Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a fun lighthearted comedy with some good laughs and a lot of penguin antics. It is perfect for kids and families looking for an easy fun movie but if you are looking for something truly special this might not be it. I had a good time watching it but it is not a movie I would go out of my way to see again.
