Mouse hunt is a slapstick violent style film about two brothers who go to extreme lengths to get rid of a mouse. The younger brother Lars is meek and lives in a world of plans which he never carries out much to the annoyance of his wife. Ernie is an ambitious professional chef who runs his own restaurant. A series of events which includes fatally poisoning the city mayor leave the two brothers with no choice but to live in a dilapidated house they inherited from their father. The house comes with a resident mouse which does not take kindly to their attempts to kill it and outwits them by running in front or behind the walls etc and triggering events which leave the brothers badly hurt. On one occasion Ernie chases the mouse up the chimney and gets stuck and the mouse finds a way back to the ground floor and opens the gas valve and when Lars strikes a match the resulting explosion sends Ernie flying up the chimney like a human cannon ball and flying 100 feet into a lake. When the brothers discover the house is valuable, they increase their efforts to kill the mouse which destroys everything but has a happy ending.
USA Today
Mike Clark
Mouse Hunt mostly squeaks by thanks to the considerable mugging prowess of its leads players, Lee Evans and Nathan Lane.
Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
Dennis Schwartz
The comedy shoots for laughs through slapstick and one-liners. The trouble is things are more cheesy than funny.
Common Sense Media
Scott G. Mignola
A vivacious, clever slapstick comedy.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
Mouse Hunt is not very funny, and maybe couldn't have been very funny no matter what, because the pieces for comedy are not in place.
Film Journal International
David Noh
Adam Rifkin's script sets things up brightly, with savvy detail and a wealth of amusingly mendacious, greedy characters.
