Mercury Rising Ratings & Reviews

Action Star Bruce Willis stars in this cracking chase movie. "Willis" plays an FBI Agent tasked with protecting "Simon", a nine year old Autistic Boy who is targeted by Government Assassin's after he cracks a Top Secret Government Code. The onscreen Chemistry between the leads is believable, Miko Hughes is terrific as "Simon", and Alec Baldwin is a perfect on screen foil for Bruce Willis. Indeed it's easily one of the better Acting performances of Bruce Willis entire career. The movie is taut, with some genuinely tense action sequences. Overall "Mercury Rising" is a little hidden gem of an action movie that definitely deserves more love and respect than it gets. It's not big budget, big on scale, or big on Special Effects, but it's big on enjoyment, and from a thriller, you can't ask for anything more than that. Terrific.
AV Club

There's such a lack of vision behind Mercury Rising that the title could have it going in either direction and it would still end up in the same familiar place.
Chicago Reader
Lisa Alspector
The actors' serious faces are out of place in this hopelessly silly action conspiracy.
Chicago Tribune
Mark Caro
Baldwin's Kudrow is a one-dimensional, humorless variation on his corporate tyrant in Glengarry Glen Ross.
Hartford Courant
Malcolm Johnson
Fortunately, as directed with muscle and heart by Harold Becker, this tale of an angry die-hard and an orphaned autistic boy caught in a deadly government plot ranks at least as high as John McTiernan's first collaboration with an embattled Willis.
Chicago Tribune
Gene Siskel
Standard action fare with a false overlay of social conscience.
Washington Post
Michael O'Sullivan
The real treat is seeing Big Daddy Bruce playing the papa bear part to the little lost boy.
Washington Post
Stephen Hunter
The mercury may rise but pulses never do.
Reel Film Reviews
David Nusair
A solid '90s thriller.
Variety
Variety Staff
Serves up some dramatic moments but never legitimately convinces.
Observer
Andrew Sarris
The always underrated Bruce Willis manages to suggest a therapeutic process at work more on his own character's anomie and alienation than on Simon's.
Los Angeles Times
Jack Mathews
Calling Mercury Rising a formula thriller suggests notes of complexity that aren't here.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
Mercury Rising is about the most sophisticated cryptographic system known to man, and about characters considerably denser than anyone in the audience.
San Francisco Chronicle
Mick LaSalle
Mercury Rising is a Bruce Willis action movie, which means that most of us know what it will be like going in, and the only question is whether it's a good one or a lousy one. Answer: This is a good one.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
Mercury Rising is instead more of a dull thud on the action film map, fodder for Willis fanatics, and not much else.
New York Times
Stephen Holden
Hugely expensive, weakly formulaic.
Salon.com
Charles Taylor
Willis is in a long line of cheerfully cynical Hollywood tough guys, and there's almost no one I'd rather watch race through an action movie. But in Mercury Rising, he's just running in place.
Entertainment Weekly
Owen Gleiberman
You can just about feel the imbecility rising.
