May Ratings & Reviews

This was a total blast. Angela Bettis kills as the titular May, a veterinary technician that struggles with her own socially awkwardness. Despite her own loneliness and isolation, May discovers that she has a sure hand at bringing other people together. This is such a fun flick. In addition to Bettis, Anna Faris is as delightful as ever. Really loved her in this. Worth checking out this hidden gem from. TW: For those that don’t like pet violence, a cat meets an untimely demise in this.
Lessons of Darkness
Nick Schager
Benefits from bursts of gory black humor as well as Bettis' riveting performance.
Dallas Morning News
Gary Dowell
Too much of a hodgepodge of borrowed ideas and uneven tone.
Denver Post
Lisa Kennedy
Part Carrie, part Frankenstein and still shlockier bits and pieces, May isn't seamless. But boy is it hard to avert one's eyes from this creature ready-made for the midnight-movie circuit.

Sara Michelle Fetters
Yet, it isn't until May starts becoming Dr. Frankenstein that she gains real self assurance and suddenly Bettis' timorous mannerisms morph into a malevolent cockiness that's at once empowering and scary-as-hell all at the same time.
Los Angeles Times
Kevin Thomas
Unfolds with the creepy elegance and carefully calibrated precision of a Dario Argento horror film.
Seattle Times
Mary Brennan
[Bettis] has a smoldering, humorless intensity that's unnerving.
Boston Globe
Ty Burr
Lowdown genre fun, a film that nearly makes up in slacker wit and high-spirited gore what it lacks in budget and elegance.
Washington Post
Desson Thomson
[McKee's] going to need better stories than this.
Entertainment Weekly
Taps into a furious atavistic energy that reflects well on the filmmaker and his fully committed cast.
Ebert & Roeper
Richard Roeper
There was no moment when I was scared by this thing.
New York Daily News
Elizabeth Weitzman
Novice director Lucky McKee wrote the first draft of this labored horror flick while he was in school, and for a student film, it's not bad. But it's not ready for the big time.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
A horror film and something more and deeper, something disturbing and oddly moving.
The Hollywood Reporter
Frank Scheck
While the film does display a certain understated style, not to mention a fair amount of witty black humor, it's ultimately undone by its familiar themes ... and a lengthy, slow-paced buildup that doesn't result in a particularly satisfying payoff.
New York Times
Stephen Holden
Led by Ms. Bettis's discreetly campy May, the performances are a cut or two above what you would find in the average slasher film. But in the end that's all it is.
Arizona Republic
Bill Muller
It is alternately ridiculous, gruesome, unlikely and stupefying.
Chicago Tribune
Robert K. Elder
A refreshing, macabre tale.
Village Voice
Dennis Lim
Ironically, the stretch marks are what you notice most.
Austin Chronicle
Marjorie Baumgarten
Until the mayhem takes over, May is a spunky little low-budget horror movie that knows its antecedents and conventions and tries to do them justice while keeping its tongue firmly planted in its cheek.
