Maria Ratings & Reviews
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025Pablo Larraín makes some of the most gorgeous looking films, period. Credit cinematographer Ed Lachman working together again after El Conde, this is another stunning looking film. Angelina Jolie is remarkable as renowned opera singer, Maria Callas. The film is filled with recognizable opera tunes, even for a casual listener. I may not be able to name them but I recognized some from Carmen, La Traviata, Tosca….Ave Maria (of course). Jolie did an amazing job performing the songs believably even though I’m aware that it’s a composite performance. As gorgeous and visually and sonically as this is (the entire trilogy included) I’m just never all that interested in these kinds of stories. It appears to be a privileged but hollow and lonely existence.
