Tests of emotion, a love triangle, strikes, and labor unrest at his native factory increasingly grip the protagonist and lead to separation from his wife. Every foray into the factory barricades ends in disaster, but neither persuasion, nor the arrival of his wife's sister from Moscow, nor a rift with a close friend can stop Valeria.
