To its credit, Life After Beth occasionally finds genuine laughs by embracing its own absurdity. Aubrey Plaza commits fully to the eccentric material, and Dane DeHaan provides a believable emotional center that prevents the story from becoming completely detached from its romantic foundation. For brief stretches, it hints at a much sharper horror-comedy than the one it ultimately becomes. My biggest issue was that the screenplay never seemed to know which side of its identity deserved the greater emphasis. The comedic moments were enough to keep the film from becoming a complete misfire, but they rarely developed into something substantial enough to carry the story forward. Instead, I was left with the feeling that the premise had exhausted most of its potential long before the film reached its conclusion. By the end, I remembered a handful of amusing albeit weird moments far more vividly than I remembered the film itself.
