Lady for a Night Ratings & Reviews
Mister Arn

“Lady for a Night” is a Southern melodrama steeped in steamboat gambling and plantation pomp, centered on the climb from grit to gentility. Joan Blondell plays a determined riverboat owner who marries into Southern high society, hoping to rise above her origins and earn a seat among the elite. The film follows her struggle for acceptance, though the class conflict is softened by sentiment, and the deeper tensions are left unexplored. Its romanticized view of the Old South doesn’t hold up, especially in how it skirts the realities of race in the plantation system.
