The Great War. The story alternates between a young North American soldier remembering being home at plowing time, enlisting, taking an ocean voyage to Europe, and going through military training - and that same man in battle, slogging through a muddy trench, enduring bombardment, being part of an assault. Death and decay are everywhere. The trenches give way to fields, the guns to plows, the soldier to soil.
