Kanton, China, jaren '40.

Extremely goofy but also quite earnest in its fight choreography. Definitely chuckled. Written, directed and starring. Big feat.

“I just remembered I have something to do. See you.” Some of the greatest physical comedy in cinema. Stephen Chow knows his stuff and it makes for excellent films. Kill Bill Part 1 but multiply the humor by 1000 The big Axe fight is amazing. The multi-step move 💀 + Pinball sound effects were S-tier Featured in Slapstick Fantastic Featured in The Non-English Niche

This film is the ultimate interpretation of Chinese folklore. Its choreography, its humor—it's pure art. The fact that it always features the same actors makes them feel almost like family to me. As a teenager, this movie left a deep mark on me: it was a comedy, sure, but then—wait—they fight! And those fights… simply the best choreography I have ever seen in my entire life. I treasure this film, and every work by Stephen Chow, because they make me feel like a child again whenever I watch them. That feeling is priceless.

Stephen Chow offers a brilliant follow up to Shaolin Soccer, maintaining the zany world of kung fu legends, heroes and villains, good vs. evil - all wrapped up in a Looney Tunesesque package that brings giggles over guffaws. These amazing stunts and choreography belong with the pure of heart dreamers like Chow, over the dark and guns akimbo lot like Stahelski. I have the utmost respect for what both accomplish, but sit firmly in Chow's camp. He fully unleashed his true potential with this one! Also deserving of a specific nod is composer Raymond Wong, who created a brilliant score that blends classic cinema with cartoonish symphony, all while maintaining a timeless Chinese lilt. 5 stars all day!

Stephen Chow leveled up here, bigger budget, bolder Visuals and a love letter to classic kung fu cinema wrapped in Looney Tunes chaos. I bought it, laughed out loud and immediately knew this was going into the Plex vault and on my shelf. Set in 1940s Canton, the story follows Sing, a wannabe gangster who stumbles into Pig Sty Alley, a slum secretly guarded by kung fu masters disguised as landlords. When the Axe Gang shows up, all hell breaks loose. What follows is a ballet of absurd violence, slapstick brilliance and genuine emotional beats that sneak up on you between punches. The fight choreography is stunning, part Shaw Brothers homage, part CGI enhanced madness. Chow blends wire-fu, cartoon physics and heartfelt storytelling like no one else. The Landlady and Landlord duo? Iconic. The Beast? Terrifying and hilarious. And Sing’s transformation? Pure myth making. Watching it felt like stepping into a kung fu comic book, exaggerated, expressive and deeply sincere. It’s not just funny; it’s beautiful. And it cemented Chow as a master of blending genre, heart and chaos. Kung Fu Hustle is Stephen Chow’s masterpiece of madness, kung fu, comedy and cartoon logic in perfect harmony. I streamed it, I logged it and I still grin every time the Landlady floats mid air with a cigarette.

Went in expecting a fun but shallow martial-arts comedy. Kung Fu Hustle blew past that. Stephen Chow mixes absurd humour, stunning fight choreography, and heart in Pig Sty Alley. Only the finale dips a little. Still a loud, wild ride I highly recommend.

This is one of the most richly imaginative, creative, downright enjoyable movies I've ever seen. I haven't enjoyed myself this much since Pulp Fiction. If you go to the movies to free your imagination, then this is the movie for you.
