Kramer vs. Kramer Ratings & Reviews
- Kevin WardJuly 2, 2025Honestly, I was little disappointed by this on my first time watch. Hoffman and Streep are both really excellent, but the script feels very much a product of it’s time. Portrays Hoffman as a nurturing empathetic father and Streep as a neglecting mother. Perhaps groundbreaking at the time in it’s depiction of nontraditional gender roles, it doesn’t have the same impact with a 2023 lens. Also the courtroom scenes felt very exaggerated and overdone. Probably not a fair comparison, but since they’re compared all the time, I can say I liked Marriage Story much, much more.
- TanalienNovember 2, 20241979’s Kramer vs. Kramer is about the dissolution of a marriage and how two people deal with such a circumstance. The opening scenes struck me as a masterpiece of characterization through action, showing us the buildup of years of marriage and its dissolution all in the span of ten minutes. There is no montage, no flashbacks, only action in the present.
